Back Hills Express: 16U Season Review

It seems like summer just started and the AAU season is already wrapping up. Today we have a Season Review article on Black Hills Express. Their 16U team had a ton of success and they finished the grassroots campaign with a 21-2 record! Express ended the season on 15-game win streak.The ballers from West River went on on top by winning it all in Vegas at the West Coast National Championships.   Ethan Dschaak is the head coach for this 16U squad, he is a former high school head coach with a passion for the game. Dschaak is a basketball junkie that truly cares about his players improving. He coaches for the kids but he also loves the game of basketball.   Black Hills Express 16U is made up with a talented group of players that deserve more attention. Devin has the ability to play at a high level (D2) but just needs more exposure."   [player_tooltip player_id='1668255' first='Dylon' last='Doren'] (2025) |6'2 G| Spearfish   "Dylon is a TERRIFIC ATHLETE. Not much he can't do on a basketball court or a football field. In addition to his natural ability, he is also a tremendous worker. His greatest asset is his natural instinct to go and get the basketball on defense. He was a key member of our run-and-jump defense. He could really turn it on when he needed to. Great at getting downhill when driving the basketball."   [player_tooltip player_id='1970467' first='Dalyn' last='Dschaak'] (2025) |6'3 G| Sturgis   "Dalyn is the complete package. At 6'2" he plays bigger than his size indicates. Good outside shooter (made 5 three pointers at the West Coast National Championships against a team from Singapore) and can post up smaller defenders. Has a terrific motor and effort is never an issue. 4.0 student who also has a high basketball IQ. Coach Determan is lucky to have him in Gregory. I think Cruz is one of the best Class B point guards in South Dakota and he will prove that over the next two years." [player_tooltip player_id='1972178' first='Brady' last='Virtue'] (2026) |6'1 G| Custer   "Brady is the youngest of the Black Hills Express. He is technically a 15U player but made the decision, which I was all for, to play 16U. Brady can play inside or outside and is an excellent shooter. He is handy around the rim and finds ways to score against bigger opponents. Brady has a bright future with the Custer Wildcats." The best complement we received was when multiple coaches referred to our discipline and that we weren't your typical "all star" type of team. We were definitely a group who prided ourselves on defensive stops, hard work, and making the extra pass."     "We concluded our year on a 15-game winning streak. After a so-so showing in an Avera/Warwick Tournament in June we didn't lose again. My hope is that not only did we find success, but we enjoyed the ride and got BETTER as a team. One of our goals was to help players get better, and I think we did that."   "I think the highlight was Vegas. We played three really good teams. One out of Austin, Texas (they play in the Under Armour Circuit), another team called the Utah Force, and a third team out of Hawaii. In each game we weren't necessarily the most talented team but I do think we were the best team."   "Our best shooters were [player_tooltip player_id='1407000' first='Devin' last='Buehler'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1263160' first='Cruz' last='Klundt']. Both perimeter guys who are primarily point guards. They are capable of playing on the ball or off the ball in the future. They are outstanding shooters!" "Best Defensive Player: Once again.... I have a hard time picking just one. I think as a collective group we prided ourselves on our defensive intensity.  We were really hard to score against."
