Aside from the riches at Wichita Collegiate, here are some other freshmen who made big contributions in the 3A class last year (in alphabetical order):
Rossville has struggled to match its success in football on the basketball court. They took another step last season by winning a handful of games and developing some young players, most significantly Donovan. He received some all-state honorable mentions and was second-team Mid-East League. He’s a talented offensive player and a gritty athlete to watch next season.

Johnson was pressed into duty for the shorthanded Eagles as a ninth grader and provided some ball handling and a shooting threat from deep. He grew into the role and had seven double-figure games after Christmas break. He’s a wiry guard who will develop physically. But he had the confidence and skill to account for 6 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists last year. The Eagles lost their top guard from a year ago, so Johnson has a chance to carry a big load as a sophomore.
Martin stepped in for Hoisington and wasn’t overmatched by the competition. His offensive production was up and down, but he showed he has the athleticism to be a guard to watch in the future. He’s long and explosive and can handle point guard, shooting guard or even small forward next season. Based on what we’ve seen this summer, his shooting percentage will improve and he’ll become more of a scorer next season.

Parker Schwarz
Parker Schwarz
An interesting player to follow is Schwarz, who posted a strange stat line of way more rebounds than points as a freshman. The Buffaloes were in for a rough season, and Schwarz was put into the fray early. He led the team with 7 rebounds per contest, with a couple of huge rebound totals standing out. He didn’t shoot a great percentage, so it will bear watching if he can round out his game.
