Day 1 did not disappoint as the top teams from Mississippi and Louisiana put on top tier performances. Prospects such as E. J. Paymon and Trey’Dez Green displayed why they are some of the top prospects in the nation with their play. There were others who had a good first day in New Orleans. In this Prep Hoops article, we will look at those players who had a good Day 1 at the JSE.
Dashawn Ceaser Dashawn Ceaser 6'3" | CG Iowa | 2024 State LA (Iowa | 2024 | 6’1″)
Ceasar was one of the most impressive players shooting and driving on Day 1. During his second game of the day, he really warmed up from deep and had defenders off balance. Ceasar also showed that he can get by bigger defenders and finish at the rim. Ceasar is a top tier guard in Louisiana and has shown the ability to score at all levels.
Jakobi Thompson (Provine | 2024 | 6’2″)
When you talk about an athletic guard who makes plays, this young man should come to mind. His Day 1 at the JSE was all about making plays in transition and around the rim. Thompson has long arms and is fast so he played havoc in the passing lanes. On the offensive side, he finished at the rim with speed and quickness that left defenders in his wake. He may be a steal for someone because he is so athletic.
Tyshawn Johnson (Alexandria High | 2026 | 6’8″)
There were times when he was the only big his team had against two or three, but this rising sophomore made a statement on Day 1. Johnson is a super athletic sophomore who showed the capability to put the ball on the deck and get to the rim against bigs his size while defending the rim on the other end. He has a swagger about him as well which breeds confidence. Look for this player to rise through the rankings soon.
Trey Alexander (Port Gibson | 2024 | 6’3″)
Alexander looked like a poise grown man among boys at times on Day 1. He played on one of the top tier Mississippi teams but looked like a grizzled pro out there on the court. Against each defender, he understood what advantage he had and used them frequently. Alexander used the stop and pop against one defender, bullied another to the goal, and then jumped over yet another. He is a Swiss army knife on the floor and very capable at scoring on all levels.
Jyrin Sowell Jyrin Sowell 6'3" | SG Captain Shreve | 2024 State LA (Captain Shreve | 2024 | 6’3″)
Sowell is another guard/wing that fits in the do-it-all bill. He can handle the ball in the open court, rebound in traffic, and finish at or above the rim. One of his best traits is that he can switch and guard four positions and has the strength and the foot work to do it. While he is a work in progress on his wing jumper, he is one of the better all-around players Louisiana has. He will be a steal for a high level college team.
Austin Ratliff (Hartfield Academy | 2024 |6’7″)
Ratliff was by and far the best energy guy on Day 1. He was the best rebounder and displayed that he could track rebounds better than anyone on any floor. He reads balls well off the rim or glass and knows what to do with it every time. Whether it is a kick out or a putback, Ratliff commanded the boards all day. He can also run the floor and finish on or above defenders. Ratliff is a spark plug for any team.
Day 2 promises to be another good day as the top teams from both states will play one another. Look for these six and some others to rule the day in New Orleans.
