In this article, we’ll look at the rising freshmen who wasted no time in making their impact felt as they look to make an early splash starting their high school careers.
Tyler Sutton | George School
Sutton was strategic and efficient in his opportunities with the ball. 2024 Christian Bliss handles the majority of the playmaking as the lead guard and rightfully so, but Sutton was effective in putting the ball on the deck off the catch and attacking with shifty and creative moves. He showed a toughness in his drives to the rim where he can either finish through contests or use his soft touch floater with good balance on his release. Sutton averaged eight points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists.
Troy Tomlin Troy Tomlin 6'3" | CG Paul VI | 2027 State VA | Paul VI
Paul VI’s roster is well-documented as one of the deeper ones on the high school level nationally, so the fact that Tomlin got the opportunity to play some minutes from head coach Glenn Farello speaks to his talent. A 6’2 guard with athleticism that allows him to finish above the rim in space, Tomlin possesses the feel and ball skills for his age that track to be another talented prospect in the never-ending Panther stable.
Baba Oladotun | DeMatha
Oladotun’s frame alone is one that leads you to believe he will have a high ceiling as a long-term prospect. Standing 6’6 with great length, Oladotun is a mobile wing that plays hard at both ends. He can surprise you with what he can do off the dribble. He’ll be one of the many DeMatha underclassmen who will get a chance to prove themselves this season in head coach Mikes Jones’ extensive rotation.
Jamaal McKnight Jr. | DeMatha
The endless depth that Coach Jones has on this DeMatha team includes a pack of wolves in the backcourt with several scrappy, tough-nosed guards. McKnight Jr. is one of those who made himself known over the weekend by pressuring the ball, bringing intensity and chipping in offensively when his number was called. He averaged 5.4 points per game while converting 12 of his 24 total field goals.
Amani Asare Amani Asare 5'9" | PG Bishop O'Connell | 2027 State VA | Bishop O’Connell
Asare showed flashes with his opportunities on the ball a couple of weekends ago at Maryland Team Camp and was consistent with his ability to keep the Knights flowing in the half court at DMV Live. While his box score numbers may not jump off the page, his minutes were important in O’Connell’s 4-0 weekend.
Israel Tchoubfong | Good Counsel
Another talented freshman in the DMV who should make a splash this winter is Tchoubfong, a 6’6 athlete who plays with a fluidity that you don’t normally see for a kid his age and size. Also possesses valuable length that contributes to his overall versatility. Tchoubfong averaged 8.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Arguably showed signs of having the highest upside in the field of freshmen.
