We will take a look at the rankings by position over the next few days. Here’s a look at the top 5 of the point and combo guards in the sophomore class.
5) Cy Hardy Cy Hardy 6'0" | PG Northside | 2025 State VA | 5’11” PG | Northside (#19 Overall)
When it comes to a breakout sophomore season, there may not be anyone who fits that statement more than Hardy who had a big year leading his Northside team to a state championship. The 5’11” lead guard is as skilled as they come as he showed all season his ability to score it in different ways and make plays on both ends of the floor. He’s shifty and has good burst with the ball in his hands to get to the rim, he can create space and is a good shooter off the catch and off the bounce and he’s an efficient scorer that can also make plays for others when he gets it going.
4) Aiden Argabright Aiden Argabright 6'0" | PG John Marshall | 2025 State #220 Nation VA | 6’0” PG | St. Stephen’s St. Agnes (#17 Overall)
Argabright continues to get better and better every time we see him, and through the spring with New World on the 3SSB Circuit he looks every bit like one of the best young guards in the DMV. The SSSAS guard is a tough nosed competitor who has a great skillset and gets it done across the board on both ends of the floor. He is excellent in pick-and-rolls and can get downhill when he turns the corner and is a good finisher in the paint and through traffic, he can knock down shots from deep and in the midrange and he he is a wizard with the ball in his hands.
3) Ashton Walker Ashton Walker 6'5" | PG Catholic | 2025 State #172 Nation VA | 6’4” PG | Oak Hill Academy (#8 Overall)
Walker was a standout on Oak Hill Red this past season, and while he didn’t play on the main team he’s shown this spring that the 757 native is one of the top guards in the state in his class and is one of the best true floor generals you’ll come across. His recent growth spurt from about 6’0” to about 6’4” makes him even more intriguing, as he can now see over the defense when they try to trap him and he can use his size defensively to get deflections and challenge shots. He is shifty and crafty off the bounce and can get wherever he wants with the ball in his hands, he has excellent feel and playmaking ability and he picks his spots and scores it efficiently.
2) Donovan Richardson Donovan Richardson 6'6" | PG Steward | 2025 State #166 Nation VA | 6’5” CG | Collegiate (#6 Overall)
Richardson is the best prospect in this class in the Richmond area, as he checks the boxes physically and has an advanced skillset to go along with improved athleticism as he is growing into his body. At 6’5” he has the ability to play on and off the basketball and he has an overall skillset offensively that allows him to impact the game across the board. He uses his size and strength to get to spots and bump defenders where he can finish in the paint over bigger defenders, he’s very good in transition both handling the ball and running the wings, he can score the ball from all three levels and he has good instincts and feel on the defensive end too.
1) Chance Mallory Chance Mallory 5'10" | PG St. Anne's Belfield | 2025 State #73 Nation VA | 5’8” PG | St. Anne’s-Belfield (#5 Overall)
While many doubted Mallory early in his career due to his size, he’s shown time and time again that he’s able to not only compete with the best of them, but often get the best of some of the top guards in the country. The 5’8” point guard has a bag full of tricks and there really isn’t an area of the game that he isn’t able to make a positive impact in. He’s a highly skilled shot maker who has effortless range both off the catch and off the bounce, he moves well off the ball to get open on back cuts and coming off of screens, he draws contact when he gets downhill and gets to the line a lot where he is almost automatic and he is a surprisingly good defender and rebounder with his instincts and knack for being around the ball. He’s been one of the top stock risers on the UAA Circuit, as he’s picked up recent offers from Virginia Tech, Seton Hall, VCU, West Virginia, UCF and Maryland.
