Continue ReadingBrevin Phillips Brevin Phillips 6’5″ | PF Urbandale | 2024 State IA is piecing together a very interesting spring season while quite literally jumping off of the screen. Phillips is the definition of a high flyer. An athletic player with great speed and ability on the court, who seems to float in the air any time he leaves his feet wether it’s for a monstrous dunk or to protect the rim on the defensive side of things. When you look at his skill set, athletic ability, and IQ for the game there is no reason to think that he couldn’t be a high volume producer at the college level. He has displayed this spring that he is always one of the best overall players on the floor when he is out there competing. He is going to use this momentum to help him elevate his game even more-so into the summer/winter seasons. Something that is more than possible when it comes to a player with a ceiling like this.
A player who has been underrated this spring around the state of Iowa in the 2024 class is Kwae China Kwae China 6’2″ | SG Cedar Rapids Washington | 2024 State IA . China, is a 6’1 combo guard who possesses a good amount of overall skill. A player who displays a high motor, competes on both ends of the floor, and can score on all three levels. With his size and speed for his position he is usually in a mismatch situation, making the most of it whenever he has the chance. When it comes to some of the most well-rounded players I’ve seen this spring, I would have to put Kwae in the conversation. He does a plethora of good things on the floor for himself and his teammates. If he keeps this up then it’s only a matter of time until some colleges come calling.
If you are familiar with boys basketball in the state of Iowa you know that having a skilled and athletic post player is a blessing. One of the more unknown but rising forwards I’ve seen this spring out of the state is Nathan Stroud Nathan Stroud 6’5″ | PF Mount Pleasant | 2024 State IA . Stroud is a 6’5 power forward with a lot more skill then people think. Usually when he gets highlighted it’s for a big dunk at the rim or a defensive stop but there is much more to his game than that. This spring he has been putting on a clinic of what it’s like to be a physical forward with a post presence near the basket. He has displayed excellent footwork, a soft touch on the ball, an elite passing ability out of the post, and done a great job of understanding when/where to use specific skills moves. Going into this winter Stroud is going to be one of the most physically dominate forwards in the state. I’m excited to see what he can make out of it.

Caleb Dyvig has come a long way. A player who has really locked in over these past few seasons and its starting to show at a fairly consistent rate. This spring Dyvig has been a sniper from long range, hitting multiple three’s in most games he has competed in. Though shooting has been his best ability, I think that he has shown on a number of occasions already that he is the type of player who can do a number of different things, in a variety of different systems. This is a great thing as college recruiters are searching for potential players who can fit into their system and what they want to accomplish. Keep an eye on Caleb and his entire Waukee Jam team, they can ball and will definitely be making a splash the rest of this AAU season and into the high school year.

When looking at the point guard position nowadays I see a lot of players that can just score the ball at a high level, so therefore they become the point guard for their teams from a younger age, leading into high school and so on. A point guard who has displayed a traditional game while leading his team this spring season is Trey McKowen Trey McKowen 5’11” | PG Kennedy | 2025 State IA . McKowen is a quick-twitch, lefty point guard who leads his team by example. He always has his guys in the right spots, creates and distributes for others, plays off of two feet, knocks down open looks when the ball is rotated back to him, and is an irritant on the defensive end with the ability to pick up in the full-court usually causing some chaos. Along with all this he has a good head on his shoulders and stays calm, no matter the situation he is in. This winter he is going to be a big part of his CR-Kennedy high school team. I can’t wait to see what he and senior transfer Joe Bean, can do together on the court.
