Hoopsource’s Elite Opening Showcase will fire up at various locations both north and south of the Columbia River, with most of the top action at the 17U level taking place at Clackamas Community College. Here’s a quick look at the teams playing in that division.
The newly formed NW Rotary Rebels program – a combination of Rotary and the Rose City Rebels – will prep for their EYBL schedule with an appearance at the Elite Opening Showcase. In the 17U division both the 17U and 16U squads will be entered. On both teams, many of the top prospects are from the state of Washington but in terms of players from Oregon, 17U will feature Jaden Steppe Jaden Steppe 6'8" | SF Tualatin | 2024 State #289 Nation OR (2024 Tualatin), Utrillo Morris Utrillo Morris 5'8" | PG Roosevelt | 2024 State OR (2024 Roosevelt), and Terrence Hill (2024 Roosevelt/AZ Compass) while 16U will feature Winters Grady Winters Grady 6'7" | SF Prolific Prep | 2025 #118 Nation CA-N (2025 Lake Oswego) and Isaac Carr Isaac Carr 6'3" | CG Central Catholic | 2025 State #75 Nation OR (2025 Central Catholic).
Oregon Prospects will have a number of the state’s top rising seniors in its top two teams in the tournament. The Black squad will be headed by the backcourt combo of Quincy Townsend Quincy Townsend 6'2" | CG Mountain View | 2024 State OR (2024 Mountain View) and Jackson Weiland Jackson Weiland 6'0" | PG South Medford | 2024 State OR (2024 South Medford), both of whom can score and distribute. Ethan Eckard Ethan Eckard 6'3" | SG Sherwood | 2024 State OR (2024 Sherwood) and Dylan Westermeyer Dylan Westermeyer 6'6" | SF Oregon City | 2024 State OR (2024 Oregon City) offer shooting while Ian Prictor Ian Prictor 6'8" | PF Mountain View | 2024 State OR (2024 Mountain View) and Cole Holum Cole Holum 6'9" | PF Lakeridge | 2024 State OR (2024 Lakeridge) will be the bigs inside. A sleeper to watch out for is Grant Olson (2024 Hermiston) whose high scoring exploits have been in the WIAA.
The Gold squad for the Prospects features a number of guys that can score the ball in Mykah Mendoza Mykah Mendoza 6'1" | SG Roseburg | 2024 State OR (2024 Roseburg), Jackson Owens Jackson Owens 6'3" | CG Cleveland | 2024 State OR (2024 Cleveland), Max Juhala Max Juhala 6'5" | SF West Linn | 2024 State OR (2024 West Linn) and Washingtonian Tait Spencer (2024 Battle Ground). Tyler Curvy Tyler Curvy 5'10" | CG Jesuit | 2024 State OR (2024 Jesuit) will man the point while Charlie Kapranos (2024 Grant) and unsigned seniors Gray Thompson Gray Thompson 6'6" | SF Central Catholic | 2023 State OR (2023 Central Catholic) and Evan Manville (2023 Union) will battle down low.
Protech (Prep) – formerly known as 3C – reunites a number of guys that grew playing together at the Beaverton Hoop YMCA and should be a formidable squad. Versatile swingmen Nico Rafalovich Nico Rafalovich 6'6" | SF Jesuit | 2024 State OR (2024 Jesuit) and Kayin Turner Kayin Turner 6'5" | SF Sunset | 2024 State OR (2024 Sunset) will be tough matchups for opponents and guards such as Donovan Crowder Donovan Crowder 5'9" | PG Liberty | 2024 State OR (2024 Liberty), Dominic Papworth Dominic Papworth 6'2" | CG Franklin | 2024 State OR (2024 Franklin), and Kwaje Laila Kwaje Laila 5'11" | SG Franklin | 2024 State OR (2024 Franklin) will help push the pace. When completely healthy, Quinn Haveman Quinn Haveman 6'3" | SG Mountainside | 2024 State OR (2024 Mountainside) will be a factor.
ONE Basketball features a squad that has some under-the-radar talent ready to be discovered. Colt Ness Colt Ness 5'10" | PG Tigard | 2025 State OR (2025 Tigard) will have a huge role with the Tigers next high school basketball season and his club experience will help him prepare. Dax Hanzlik Dax Hanzlik 6'5" | SF Westside Christian | 2024 State OR (2024 Westside Christian) and Peyton Maurer Peyton Maurer 6'3" | SF Cascade Christian | 2024 State OR (2024 Cascade Christian) faced off in the 3A championship game but will now team up with ONE. Patrick Napierala Patrick Napierala 6'5" | SG Lakeridge | 2024 State OR (2024 Lakeridge) and Kevin Benson Kevin Benson 6'6" | PF West Linn | 2025 State OR (2024 West Linn) are ones to keep an eye on.
DENY Basketball will be there on the first day of pool play but their games won’t count in the standings. While a couple of these guys will be out due to injury, the top players for head coach Jonny Canalin this season will include Kyle Counts Kyle Counts 6'7" | PF Wilsonville | 2024 State OR (2024 Wilsonville), Jacey Canalin Jacey Canalin 5'7" | PG Wells | 2024 State OR (2024 Wells), Kallen Gutridge Kallen Gutridge 6'4" | SG Wilsonville | 2024 State OR (2024 Wilsonville), and AJ Noland AJ Noland 6'0" | CG Tulalatin | 2024 State OR (2024 Tualatin).
Other Oregon-based squads at the event include OBC and Portland Select. Action starts 9:05 AM on Saturday morning.
