Several well-known teams and prospects, as well as prospective newcomers, competed in the event. Over 100 teams battled this past weekend, each with their own set of tools. Let’s take a look at some of the best athletes I saw.
Madden Gilliatt
Madden Gilliatt
Standing at 6-foot-2, Gilliatt played much bigger than his height may indicate. Throughout this past weekend at Boo Williams Sports Complex, Gilliatt did a good job of getting into the paint and making a play, rather that be from beating his man off the dribble on the perimeter or muscling his way to the rim and drawing fouls as he does so. On one play, while getting downhill, we saw Gilliatt use a nice spin move to lose his defender completely and create a wide open layup at the rim.
Triston Skipwith
Triston Skipwith
Skipwith put on a point guard clinic this past weekend at Boo Williams Sports Complex. Throughout the weekend we seen consistent paint touch and the right reads being made when the ball was in his hands. Skipwith has a tight handle on the ball which he used to break defenders down and create for himself on the perimeter. In the pick and roll, Skipwith operated with patience and a high IQ to force the defense to overcommit before making a pass to create a better opportunity for teammates. We also seen Skipwith coming off of on-ball screens hard, with intent to create space for floaters and shots in the lane.
Throughout this past weekend, Tilley did a good job containing opposing ball handlers and rotating in help defense. On one play, Tilley moved his feet with his arms and legs out to deny any potential driving angles and stuck with the quick and twitchy ball handler to get the block on the step back jumper. Tilley’s straight line drives were extremely difficult for the defense to stop as they typically led to a finish at the rim or a trip to the free-throw line. While getting down hill on one possession we saw Tilley use a strong, prompt pick up on his drive to take the reaching defender out of the picture for a finish at the rim.
Carter Abernathy
Carter Abernathy
Throughout this past weekend at Boo Williams Sports Complex, Abernathy did a good job of making his presence felt in the paint as well as on the perimeter. Abernathy stayed in motion when off-ball and did a good job of patiently occupying open space to be rewarded with passes for easy shots at the rim. On the perimeter, Abernathy displayed the footwork to beat slower defenders off the dribble as well as the ability to knock down contested catch and shoot three-pointers.
Stagg put on dominant performance this past weekend at Boo Williams Sports Complex, the first dominant play i saw from Stagg over the weekend, he caught the ball in the low-post with a smaller defender on his back and wastes no time in pushing the defender under the rim as he finishes the play with a rim-rocking one-hand slam. Stagg extended his scoring to the three-point line where seen him pop out to knock down some catch and shoot threes. On the defensive end, Stagg operated with good defensive awareness and gave a dominant effort on the glass as he consistently hunted and pulled down strong rebounds in traffic.
