Williams is one of the more talented guards still available in Ohio. Having a big year for ISA, Williams has had some huge offensive explosions at the prep school level this season. A talented downhill attacker, Williams has real burst and creativity with his dribble moves and is a dangerous pull-up shooter. The Chicago native is a good option for scholarship programs looking to add a combo guard who can fill it up.
Smith is a prospect who I’ve always been a fan of with his impressive athleticism, scoring ability and most importantly physicality and defensive effort. During the grassroots season I thought Smith was a great guard defender. During the high school season Smith is asked to create offense and hardly gets a chance to rest so his defensive ability doesn’t shine as much as it did during the summer. I think Smith is a scholarship level talent who might slip to the Division III level, which would allow him to make an instant impact.
One of the most athletic players in SW Ohio, Allen is a high-flying guard who has some ridiculous highlights. Still competing in the playoffs, Allen will lead Dunbar against Woodward on Sunday in a Division II district final at Xavier University. I’ve written about Allen numerous times but his athleticism, shot-making ability and ability to play on or off the ball are all intriguing skills that he’ll bring to the college level. Allen has also been one of the most productive players in the Dayton area over the past two seasons.
Watkins is another available guard still competing in the OHSAA playoffs, leading Perrysburg to a district final against Lima Senior on Friday at Lake High School. Watkins plays primarily point guard for the Jackets but is capable of playing off the ball in a more downhill, slashing role. Watkins best ability is his perimeter defense, which gives opposing ball handlers nightmares when they go against him. College programs looking for a defensive stopper on the perimeter should check out Watkins this March.
Matthews has been one of the most productive players in the GMC over the past two seasons, finishing near the top of the league in scoring and assists. A fiery competitor, Matthews will leave it all on the court every time he laces up his shoes. Matthews has a knack for hitting big shots from the outside and attacks the rim with a fearless nature. Small college programs looking for a guard who can score it and create for others should take a look at Matthews.
