Top Player Comments from coach Adam Gale
Max McGreevy (2023) |6’2 F| – “He was an undersized post who really improved throughout the year with his post defense. In addition to finding ways to grab rebounds despite being outsized.”
Clay Hansen (2023) |5’11 G| – “He was off to a great start as an outside threat and one of our primary scores with Layke Wold Layke Wold 5'10" | CG Chester Area | 2025 State SD out, however, an ankle injury sidelined him for a solid 3-4 weeks in late December, but when he came back he found his role on offense in addition to becoming one of our top defenders on the perimeter.“
Jovi Wolf Jovi Wolf 6'0" | SG Chester Area | 2024 State SD (2024) |5’11 G| – “He was our primary scorer throughout the year. He has been a varsity member since his 8th-grade year. Wolf has really improved his outside shooting in the last two years. He has always been a slasher but he has become a huge threat from the perimeter. Jovi had multiple games where he hit 5 or more threes.“
Layke Wold Layke Wold 5'10" | CG Chester Area | 2025 State SD (2025) |5’10 G| – “He was hurt for the first chunk of games of the year due to a football knee injury. However, once he returned our offense began to click and he carried us through games with his consistent perimeter shooting. In addition, Wold added to his game by becoming more of an attacking guard in the paint. He also showed that he is a special shooter.”
Q&A with coach Adam Gale
PHD: How would you sum up the season for your squad?
Coach Gale: “The season started out rough with injuries to our point guard ( Layke Wold Layke Wold 5'10" | CG Chester Area | 2025 State SD ) and then our shooting guard (Clay Hansen). Once we got Layke back, that same game Clay went out, so in our first 10 games we were never in a groove offensively. In addition, the first half of our season was mainly the bulk of our conference schedule which is the Big East in which we are the only Class B member. Therefore, we learned some painful lessons against really quality teams such as Beresford, Sioux Valley, Baltic, etc. However, once we got healthy and began to figure out our offensive identity we began to click by late January/early February. We were playing our best basketball at the end of the season.”
PHD: What were some of the highlights that stick out from the season?
Coach Gale: “Our season began to turn around in mid/late January during a week stretch of really tough games where we played Dell Rapid St. Mary’s, Beresford, Canistota, and Howard. However, it was really the first time we were full strength and it was during those games that we competed for good chunks of the games and began to believe we could play against really good teams. From then on we gained confidence and went on a run to win 6 of our last 7 games.”
PHD: How did your team overcome adversity?
Coach Gale: “As noted above we had a lot of adversity to overcome throughout the year with injuries, snow cancellations, and tough opponents. We went the entire month of January without having two practices in a row before a game. Therefore, maximizing practice time was huge and to the boys’ credit, we didn’t have too many “wasted” practices, which was the sign of a mature, hardworking team. They never got discouraged despite losing tough games against quality teams, instead, we kept saying just believe in what we are doing. We will get there in February just like in 2021/2022 and we will be playing our best basketball. To the kids’ credit, they bought in, they achieved that, and it paid off for them.”
PHD: Who were some of your hardest workers and what did they do?
Coach Gale: “Clay Hansen (sr, G) was a very hard worker on both ends. On offense, he did all the little things to get himself open, he also freed up others on the floor. Clay played very unselfishly and made hard cuts off the ball into the paint to open things up. Defensively, there were games where he was asked to guard the team’s best forward and he was very much undersized. Hansen was the epitome of a glue player and the type of player you need on your team or it falls apart. He took 6 charges on the year, which is another trait of a tough player.”
PHD: Who are a couple of role players that stood out to you?
Coach Gale: “Brayden Schut (jr, G) was a huge role player for us, most notably on the defensive end. On most nights, he was tasked with guarding the opponent’s best player and by the 2nd half of the year he really started figuring things out with his on-the-ball defense. He was a huge asset for us this season.“
PHD: Can you talk about your seniors and what will be missed?
Coach Gale: “Max McGreevy, Clay Hansen, and Logan Fods are the three seniors. All three will be missed. Up until this year, they were the scout team for 3 years playing behind our core group of 8 seniors from 2021-2022. They set a great example to other players about the importance of the team. We would not have had the success we had in years past or this season without them.”
PHD: Who are some up-and-comers to look out for in the future?
Coach Gale: “ Jovi Wolf Jovi Wolf 6'0" | SG Chester Area | 2024 State SD and Layke Wold Layke Wold 5'10" | CG Chester Area | 2025 State SD are going to be huge proponents of our team moving forward. Jovi will be a senior and Layke will be a junior and both are returning starters with experience behind them. They were our leading scorers and will be tasked with doing the same next year. We have a plethora of underclassmen all coming back in the likes of Garret Hansen Garret Hansen 6'3" | SF Chester | 2025 State SD (jr, F) who was our post off the bench and played very significant minutes the 2nd half of the year. Will Seeley (jr. G) had a strong JV season along with a core group of freshmen, to be sophomores in JD Prorok JD Prorok 6'4" | SF Chester | 2026 State SD , Carter Vogel, Jaxton Opdahl, Zach Moyer Zach Moyer 5'11" | SF Chester | 2026 State SD , and Chance Wyszynski. All have holes to fill at the varsity level and got valuable experience on the JV team and spot/situational minutes at the varsity level.
