Unlike the 6A All-Tournament Team, which was pretty cut and dried, the 5A team was very difficult to pick. It seemed that just about every leading candidate had one spectacular outing and one “off game.”

With all due respect to [player_tooltip player_id='1080207' first='Tyson' last='Ruud'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1270296' first='Mason' last='English'], who both hit for 22 points in their first-round losses, we had to go with guys who played three games.

There were at least two players that could have filled nearly each spot (aside from center, which [player_tooltip player_id='1080159' first='Will' last='Anciaux'] pretty much owned). We had to go with a tie at one position and make a few tough selections at others. We'll mention the close competitors for those spots.

Here is the 2023 5A All-Tournament Team:

PG – [player_tooltip player_id='1772982' first='Terrell' last='King'], 5-foot-10 guard, 2025, Hutchinson:

This one wasn't actually all that close. Several of the 5A clubs use a big man to run the point at times, or they have a “point guard by committee.” Not Hutchinson. Their trigger man is a traditional point guard, and he was excellent in every game. King handles the ball deftly and knows how to run an offense. He can get into the lane to score or get it to scores. He led his team in assists each game, and his stat line was very impressive: 40 points and 14 assists.

SG – [player_tooltip player_id='1300865' first='Ketraleus' last='Aldridge'], 6-foot-4 guard, 2023, Highland Park:

Aldridge's one “off game” came when Highland Park was running away from Basehor-Linwood. He was big in the other two games. In the loss to Andover in the semifinal, he was demonstrated why he's one of the top seniors in the state. He hit 9-13 from the field, including 4-6 from deep, and demonstrated his elite athleticism. He scored 24 and grabbed 8 boards. He finished with 47 points. Hutchinson's [player_tooltip player_id='1080175' first='Garrett' last='Robertson'] merited a look at this spot, but he was shut out in the consolation game.

SF – (tie) [player_tooltip player_id='1080185' first='BJ' last='Redic'], 6-foot-3 forward, 2023, Andover (pictured), and [player_tooltip player_id='1080189' first='Eli' last='Shetlar'], 6-foot-6 forward, 2023, Andover:

It seemed fitting to split a position between these two. They had their brilliant moments and some lows points. But the bottom line is, Andover took home the title and it was in large part due to these brilliant seniors. Redic captured headlines with some big plays in big moments. He showed off his athleticism and his junkyard dog mentality. He scored 35 points in the tournament. Shetlar produced impressive point and rebound totals in the first two games, but took a back seat in the finale. So these two champs will share this spot. [player_tooltip player_id='1772982' first='Terrell' last='King']'s older brother Dauntay King got some consideration for this spot.

PF – [player_tooltip player_id='1270287' first='Will' last='Thengvall'], 6-foot-4 forward, 2024, Kapaun:

Thengvall looked like the player of the tournament before he struggled in the championship game. He was brilliant in the beating of Blue Valley Southwest with 22 points and 4 assists. He also got 14 points and 5 assists in the manhandling of Hutchinson. Highland Park's stud sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1588346' first='Jacorey' last='Robinson'] deserved some consideration for this spot.

C – [player_tooltip player_id='1080159' first='Will' last='Anciaux'] 6-foot-6 center, 2023, Kapaun:

Anciaux was by far the best big man of the four teams that advanced. He got double-digit rebounds in every game. His three game totals: 36 points and 31 boards.

Sixth Man – [player_tooltip player_id='1300821' first='Blake' last='Rucker'], 6-foot-2 forward, 2024, Andover:

Kapaun's Max Keller was in the running for this spot for his versatile contribution. But Rucker was critical in Andover's three game run, while Keller struggled in the championship. Rucker was really good in every game. In fact, he was second or third on the team in scoring in each contest. His three game numbers: 14-23 from the field with five 3-pointers, 37 total points.

Unlike the 6A All-Tournament Team, which was pretty cut and dried, the 5A team was very difficult to pick. It seemed that just about every leading candidate had one spectacular outing and one “off game.”
