Here’s a look at where things stand in 1A Class with six more second-round games on tap for Saturday:
Substate 1/District 1
Third-ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck (20-2) topped Hartley-Melvin-Sandborn, 58-45, Thursday night. The Hawks received 19 points, seven rebounds and two steals from Collin Homan Collin Homan 6'5" | PF Remsen, St. Mary's | 2025 State IA . Jaxon Bunkers Jaxon Bunkers 5'11" | SF St. Mary's, Remsen | 2023 State IA , a senior, added 11 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and a pair of steals for the winners, who face South O’Brien in Tuesday’s district final.
South O’Brien (16-7) won at Kingsley-Pierson, 44-35, Thursday night. Junior Ben Woodall netted 13 points and pulled down five rebounds for the Wolverines, while classmate David Bottjen added 11 points, seven boards and four steals.
Substate 1/District 2
Host Gehlen Catholic (19-5) advanced to the District 2 Final with a 53-41 win against George-Little Rock Thursday. Senior Keaten Bonderson Keaten Bonderson 6'0" | PG Gehlen Catholic | 2023 State IA led the way with 27 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists. Connor Kraft, also a senior, added eight points and six rebounds for the Jays.
They’ll face 10th-ranked Newell-Fonda (17-4) in Tuesday’s championship. The Mustangs won, 83-53, Thursday at GTRA with senior Carter Sievers Carter Sievers 6'1" | PG Newell Fonda | 2023 State IA netting 28 points, pulling down 10 rebounds, handing out six assists and swiping six steals. Fellow senior Mason Dicks contributed 20 points and six assists.
Substate 2/District 3
Sixth-ranked Dunkerton (22-1) bested visiting North Butler, 52-39, Thursday night. Senior Preston Gillespie Preston Gillespie 6'3" | SF Dunkerton | 2023 State IA posted 17 points, 13 rebounds, two blocks, two steals and two assists in the victory. He was complemented by sophomore Dylan Marquart Dylan Marquart 6'1" | SG Dunkerton | 2025 State IA , who added 14 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
The Raiders moved on to Tuesday’s district final where they will meet South Hamilton, 49-46 victors Thursday at West Hancock.
Substate 2/District 4
Host Newman Catholic (19-4) advanced with a 74-65 triumph against Bishop Garrigan Thursday. Junior Toby Kesten’s 23 points paced the winners, while senior Douglas Taylor Douglas Taylor 6'5" | SF Newman Catholic | 2023 State IA filled the stat sheet with 20 points, 10 boards and seven dimes.
The Knights meet North Union (15-8) in Tuesday’s final. The Warriors won at West Fork, 75-65, Thursday. They took control with a 21-6 third quarter.

No. 2 North Linn cruised by South Winneshiek, 97-64, Thursday. Junior Ty Pflughaupt Ty Pflughaupt 6'4" | SF North Linn | 2024 State IA went off for 33 points and 16 rebounds. Senior Tate Haughenbury Tate Haughenbury 6'5" | PF North Linn | 2023 State IA added 13 points, 13 boards and seven assists.
The Lynx will meet up with Maquoketa Valley (16-7) Tuesday for the right to play in the substate championship contest. The Wildcats received 17 points and eight rebounds from junior Kody Hoeger in a 47-42 victory against Turkey Valley Thursday. Senior Avery Holtz Avery Holtz 5'10" | PG Maquoketa Valley | 2023 State IA chipped in with 14 points and three assists for the winners.
Substate 3/District 6
Wapsie Valley (19-4) got 20 points and 19 rebounds from senior Mason Harter Mason Harter 6'6" | PF Wapsie Valley | 2023 State IA Thursday in knocking off Nashua-Plainfield, 68-52. His classmate, Casey O’Donnell Casey O’Donnell 6'4" | PF Wapsie Valley | 2023 State IA , contributed 21 points and four assists to the victory.
In the final, the Warriors take on Central City, 58-49 victors against Lisbon Friday. Sophomore Matthew Klostermann Matthew Klostermann 5'10" | PG Central City | 2025 State IA dropped 23 points, handed out five assists, corralled four rebounds and swiped four steals for the winners. Junior Mekhi Benton Mekhi Benton 6'3" | PF Central City | 2024 State IA added 16 points, four boards and two steals.
Substate 4/District 7
New London (17-6) pulled off an upset of No. 5 WACO Friday night in Wayland. Kade Benjamin Kade Benjamin 6'6" | PF New London | 2023 State IA ‘s put-back with four seconds remaining in regulation proved to be the difference.
The Tigers will lock up with Winfield-Mount Union, 63-49 winners against Burlington Notre Dame Friday. Iowa football recruit Cam Buffington Cam Buffington 6'2" | PF Winfield-Mt. Union | 2024 State IA scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while fellow junior Abram Edwards Abram Edwards 6'5" | PF Winfield-Mt. Union | 2024 State IA kicked in 11 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals.
Substate 4/District 8
Marquette Catholic (21-3) is on to the final after knocking off Midland, 67-46, Friday. Sophomore Spencer Roeder Spencer Roeder 6'5" | PF Maquette Catholic | 2025 State IA had 13 points and three assists for the victors, while Evan Scott, a senior, and junior Isaac Brinker each scored 10.
Prince of Peace (17-6) advanced to meet Marquette Catholic in Tuesday’s final with a 79-74 triumph at Bellevue. Sophomore Hakeal Powell Hakeal Powell 5'11" | SG Prince Of Peace | 2025 State IA has led the Irish in scoring this season at 17.1 points per game.
Substate 5/District 9
Eighth-ranked Baxter (19-1-1) took down Sigourney, 68-46, Friday. The Bolts have been receiving 20.4 points and 6.6 rebounds a contest this season from senior Carson Scroggins Carson Scroggins 6'4" | PF Baxter | 2023 State IA .
They’ll face the winner of Saturday’s game between Moravia and Montezuma in Tuesday’s championship.
Substate 5/District 10
Ninth-ranked Madrid (20-2) looked sharp Friday in an 85-31 victory against visiting Collins-Maxwell. Sophomore Toryn Severson Toryn Severson 6'4" | SG Madrid | 2025 State IA led the way with 23 points, while senior Jackson Newell Jackson Newell 6'8" | C Madrid | 2023 IA scored 17, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked seven shots. Tenth-grader Fabian Ortiz-Alaniz Fabian Ortiz-Alaniz 5'8" | PG Madrid | 2025 State IA contributed 13 points, 11 steals and seven assists in the win.
The Tigers next play Mount Ayr, who topped Mormon Trail, 74-41, Friday. Senior Jaixen Frost Jaixen Frost 6'2" | PG Mount Ayr | 2023 State IA scored 28, pulled down 10 rebounds, and delivered five steals and four assists, while classmate Braydon Pierson added 17 points and 11 boards.
Substate 6/District 11
No. 3 Gladbrook-Reinbeck (21-2) overwhelmed HLV, 88-26, Friday. Senior William Kiburis William Kiburis 6'4" | PG Gladbrook-Reinbeck | 2023 State IA tallied 26 points, six rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks, and classmate Caleb Egesdal Caleb Egesdal 5'10" | SG Gladbrook-Reinbeck | 2023 State IA scored 24.
Keota (21-3) is next up for the Rebels. The Eagles eliminated Belle Plaine, 68-56, Friday. Juniors Sawyer Stout Sawyer Stout 5'10" | SG Keota | 2024 State IA and Cole Kindred have led them in scoring this season at 18.6 and 12.4 points per game, respectively.

Lynnville-Sully (21-2) bested Hillcrest Academy, 56-48, Friday with junior Mitchell Miller Mitchell Miller 6'2" | SG Lynnville-Sully | 2024 State IA scoring 14 points and adding five assists, and classmate Klayton Van Dyke Klayton Van Dyke 6'5" | PF Lynnville-Sully | 2024 State IA tallying 12 points and 10 rebounds.
North Mahaska (19-4) awaits the Hawks after dispatching of Pekin, 66-60, Friday. The Warhawks are getting 17.4 points per game from Lane Harmon Lane Harmon 6'1" | SF North Mahaska | 2023 State IA this season, while classmate Nash Smith Nash Smith 6'6" | SF North Mahaska | 2023 State IA is adding 14.8.
Substate 7/District 13
Matters will be decided Saturday in this district. Top-ranked Grandview Christian (21-0) plays host to Earlham and Stanton is at Lenox with the winners meeting in Tuesday’s final.
Substate 7/District 14
ACGC (15-8) advanced with a 78-64 win against IKM-Manning Friday. Senior Brock Littler Brock Littler 5'8" | PG ACGC | 2023 State IA has contributed 15.7 points a game this winter, while Lance Bunde, a junior, has notched 13.0 for the Chargers.
They’ll face the winner of Saturday’s Ankeny Christian-Coon Rapids-Bayard in Tuesday’s final.

Fourth-ranked West Harrison (21-1) proved too much for West Manona in a 72-35 win Thursday. Koleson Evans Koleson Evans 6'6" | SF West Harrison | 2023 State IA had 22 points and eight rebounds, while Sage Evans Sage Evans 6'2" | PF West Harrison | 2023 State IA had 20 and 13. Mason King Mason King 5'10" | PG West Harrison | 2023 State IA added 14 points and seven assists for the winners.
The Hawkeyes await the winner of Saturday’s Woodbine-Exira-EHK game.
Substate 8/District 16
Bedford (20-3) is on to the final after topping Sidney 67-53 Thursday. Sophomore Cal Peterman Cal Peterman 6'2" | PG Bedford | 2025 State IA has averaged 11.1 points and 6.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists for the Bulldogs, while senior Asher Weed scores 10.9 PPG and adds 6.9 RPG.
They face the winner of Saturday’s East Mills-Tri-Center contest in Tuesday’s final.
