But scrappy host University Lab began finding some confidence and momentum in the third quarter to launch into a furious fourth-quarter rally in the semifinal of the inaugural Wayde Sims Foundation Invitational.
The Cubs trimmed the deficit all the way down to two on a jumper by senior guard Seth Mays.
But each time U-High knocked — back within six, back within four and then back within two — senior forward C’Zavian “Zae” Teasett had a timely Scotlandville answer that proved just enough to never relinquish even a share of the lead.
And an emphatic Booker dunk off the right baseline helped the Hornets begin icing away a 67-59 win.

Like most opponents since Booker returned to the lineup from an illness, U-High seemed to have no answers for the Scotlandville big man as he scored the game’s first six points on three point-blank baskets assisted by three different teammates en route to 14 points in the first quarter alone. Booker finished with 25 points and game-highs of 13 rebounds and three blocked shots, as well as a pair of steals and pair of assists.
The Cubs were never able to fully shut Booker down, but did manage to make him work harder on both ends of the court and miss a few more field goals than other opponents have been able to. Versatile junior big man Cooper Coates was pivotal with his abilities to shoot from deep and handle the ball enabling U-High to keep Booker moving and often pull him out to the perimeter. While this area is far from Booker’s comfort zone or strongest suit, he did manage to hold his own and not allow Coates much easily either.

The senior forward was the Hornets’ leading distributor early with six first-half assists — largely quick, well-placed entry passes to Booker, but also kicking back from the lane or across the court to Chase Sample for a pair of open jumpers — before taking over as the primary scorer down the stretch en route to a game-high 27 points. When U-High cut back to within six points and four points, Teasett drained 3-pointers to slow the comeback momentum. And when that margin slimmed even further to two points, Teasett made a nice cut to the lane for an easy basket off a pass from Booker.
He missed a pair of earlier attempts at highlight-reel dunks to break the home team and its fans, but never got tentative or strayed from his typical game as a result. In addition to the 27 points and six assists, Teasett grabbed nine rebounds and a pair of steals.

The sophomore guard continues to develop his feel for how to best fit the role Scotlandville needs from him, and the Cubs’ physical guard group presented some challenges to his typical success shooting and passing from the perimeter. He still managed to make his impact by leading the team in rebounding for a long stretch. He finished with eight rebounds, five assists and two late points.
Chase Sample (5’10” | 2023)
The senior guard hit a pair of first-quarter 3-pointers and a second-quarter corner jumper just inside the arc to help carry the perimeter scoring load in the first half. Sample finished with nine points, five assists and two rebounds.
Seth Mays (6’4″ | 2023)
The baby brother of former U-High standouts Skylar and Spencer Mays helped spear-head the Cubs’ rally with 14 points, five rebounds, a steal and an assist. His long frame, strong ball-handling and use of pacing to get past and around defenders and into the lane at times looked reminiscent of a young Skylar, now playing professionally in the G League, back in his own prep days with Sims in the same gym.
Darryl Hurst (2024)
Hurst used his physical frame to help create some of the Scotlandville turnovers and miscues that factored in largely to U-High’s second half success. He snatched a pair of steals, blocked a shot, fished out four assists and was step for step with Mays with 14 points and five rebounds.
Cooper Coates (6’6″ | 2024)
The junior big man whose skill and perimeter shooting provided a different matchup for Booker that was critical in the game ended up with a team-high 16 points, as well as four rebounds, two steals and an assist.
