On Thursday, Jan 12th I attended the 2A Phoenix Christian Cougars hosting the 2A Phoenix Country Day Eagles.

Two top-10 teams in 2A battled it out. Phoenix Christian got out of the gate fast and literally never looked back. They led 36-17 at the half and won it 66-35. The ball movement for the Cougars was a thing of beauty. Everyone touched the ball and got many open looks all night. The overall speed and athleticism of the team was too much for the Eagles.

Here were some of the varsity standouts:

[player_tooltip player_id='1305181' first='Tommy' last='Randolph'] Phoenix Christian (Pictured)

His presence was felt everywhere. From his passing, scoring and defense. He has a tighter handle and is becoming a very good passer. He made a few impressive pocket passes in perfect stride to this teammates. He is a very good teammate as he is extremely unselfish. When he gets a step on his defender, he is usually at the rim in a few strides. He was too fast, too strong, too quick to keeping him out of the paint. But his passing is making him even more valuable as a prospect. His euro game is about as good as you can get in HS. It is fast, powerful, deceptive and quick. His back door game is top-notch as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='1746741' first='Colin' last='Cajthaml'] Phoenix Christian

One of the more unique players you will watch. He isn't the above the rim athlete and isn't fleet of foot, but he shockingly is a phenomenal passer. Almost makes trick passes on the regular. His post footwork is next level stuff, he comes with elite hands and feel for the game. He also will step out and hit the three easily. He plays winning basketball using his skills and mind.

[player_tooltip player_id='1746663' first='Xavier' last='Sandoval'] Phoenix Christian

A fluid ball handler who is a two-way player. He pressures other ball handlers and has long arms and recovers quickly to block shots on defense. He sees the court well and makes good passes to his teammates. His passing made them go on deep runs plus he can burst into the lane to score.

[player_tooltip player_id='1231502' first='Bryce' last='Anderson'] Phoenix Christian

A hyper athletic forward has supreme bounce to flush it down way above the crowd. He can spin off his defender and score. He was set up for alley-oops a couple times and not many leap up as high as him for rebounds. He does most of his work inside the paint and brings his live body to every game.

[player_tooltip player_id='1305182' first='Jace' last='Hagan'] Phoenix Christian

A long and lean scoring guard is a shooter to take some pressure off of Randolph. He is crafty around the hoop and can shoot it past the three point line. He uses his length on defense and takes good shots. He handles pressure decently and moves the ball.

[player_tooltip player_id='1490238' first='JD' last='Jones'] Phoenix Country Day

A physical wing is a very good passer. He is very efficient in the paint and has a clean stroke from the FT line plus has a drop step move to score. He can rip thru and score it effectively and plays and thinks the game quickly. He has a real motor to rebound the ball in and out of his area. He took charges and his IQ is very high. He handles it decently and has a nice shooting stroke.

[player_tooltip player_id='1220378' first='Sammy' last='Brodsky'] Phoenix Country Day

A scoring lead guard is a crafty passer. He just got back from an injury and he is slowly settling in. They need his veteran leadership and he talks a lot on defense. He is very good off of the pick and roll game and he can hit the catch three in rhythm. He will be better as the season goes on.

[player_tooltip player_id='1490887' first='Blake' last='Sosnowitz'] Phoenix Country Day

A flashy scoring lead guard is a smart neck up type of player. He has the floater game and he is a good passer with his left or right hand. He comes with a quick trigger and deep range on his triples. He was a little streaky in this contest but you see the skill and savvy of the sophomore. He also grew around two-three inches since last year.

[player_tooltip player_id='1746732' first='Grant' last='Brown'] Phoenix Country Day

A bigger lead guard with a high IQ. He can create his own offense with step back threes and can catch and shoot from the stripe with a fast release. He makes good reads and is constantly trying to look for open cutters and his shooters to get open. He changes speeds often to free himself up.
