Continue ReadingWhen you watch McKowen play, it’s easy to tell that he has grown up around the game and that he has a tremendous understanding of how to play on both ends of the floor. He’s a quick guard with a high IQ who can get others involved, make a major impact on the defensive end with his quickness and instincts, and he’s a versatile, three-level scoring threat who will only improve as he continues to add strength to his frame. A talented lefty who can break down a defense and get to the rim, or shoot it from deep either off the dribble or the catch, he’s a valuable role player for the Cougars right now and will step into a much larger role next season. He had 5 points on 2-4 shooting (1-2 3P), 3 rebounds, and 2 steals in the Cougars win over Cedar Falls.
Galvin was sensational in the Tigers loss to Kennedy, going for 23 points on 8-12 shooting (7-10 3P) with 6 rebounds, an assist, a steal, and a block. The lead guard is a tremendous ball-handler and decision-maker who protects the basketball, can get others involved, and can break down the defense and get to the bucket. But he was at his best as an off-ball guard in their game against the Cougars, moving without the ball in his hands, utilizing off-ball screens, and finding spaces in the defense to get his shot off. He’s a great 3-point shooter with a pure, repeatable stroke, and a ton of range. He showed that he’s capable of knocking down shots both off the dribble and the catch, and he didn’t shy away from a big moment. He had a huge game against one of the best defensive teams in the state, and as he continues to develop and mature physically, allowing him to further round out his all-around offensive game, he could turn into one of the most deadly scorers in the state.
Highlights
A high IQ wing with a tremendous feel for the game and understanding of spacing on the offensive end, Van Regenmorter is a versatile three-level scorer and playmaker with a bright future for the Wolfpack. In their win over West Harrison, he had 15 points on 5-5 shooting (3-3 3P, 2-3 FT), 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. He is a good enough ball-handler to play in ball screen action as the primary ball-handler and decision-maker, but he’s also a big enough body that he can be the screener and provide a lot of different options as a shooter, role man, or secondary passer off the catch. He’ll need to continue to tighten up his ball handling as he moves on to the next level, but that is still a few years away and he has plenty of time to continue to develop in that regard. He uses his length effectively on the defensive end, getting into passing lanes and contesting shots.
Highlights
Severson has already firmly established himself as one of the great scorers in the state, but he showed in the Tigers’ narrow loss to Van Meter that he isn’t solely a scorer, he’s a really good all-around player. He has really good size and length on the wing, and he uses his length effectively both on the defensive end and to compete on the glass. He’s a high IQ scorer who doesn’t force anything, and at times can almost be too deferential on that end. He’s a highly efficient scoring threat with a pure stroke from behind the arc, and while he isn’t the quickest or the bounciest athlete, he knows how to get to his spots and he does a great job using his length and IQ to get the best of defenders. He had 16 points on 5-10 shooting (3-6 3P, 3-4 FT), 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and a block.

A small off-ball guard, Ortiz-Alaniz is a confident shooter with the ability to get scorching hot from behind the arc in a hurry. He has a quick release off the catch and good form on his jumper, and he showed that he can do a little bit of ball-handling as well. He’s certainly at his best when he’s moving without the ball in his hands and torching teams from behind the arc, but there are some other skills here that can continue to be developed, especially if he grows a bit more. He had 12 points on 4-7 shooting (2-5 3P, 2-4 FT), 2 rebounds, and an assist in their loss to Van Meter.
