Continue ReadingA confident combo guard who showed that he can play with or without the ball in his hands, Matson (cover photo) had 6 points (2-5 FG, 2-4 3P), 3 rebounds, and an assist in his varsity debut for the Lions. He has decent size and length, moves really well without the ball in his hands, and is a really confident shooter with a quick release off the catch and plenty of range.
Highlights
Carson Guthrie
Carson Guthrie
Guthrie’s numbers (3 points on 1-3 shooting, 2 assists) won’t jump off the page, but he played a strong all-around game off the bench for the Wildcats in their loss to Des Moines Christian. He’s small but showed that he can be a reliable secondary ball-handler and he has a smooth stroke from deep.
Joe Clement
Joe Clement
Clement drew a start in his first varsity action for Des Moines Christian, and while he didn’t post a big stat line (0 points on 0-3, 5 rebounds, and an assist), like Guthrie, he played a solid all-around floor game. He’s a good ball-handler who should have had a handful of assists that weren’t finished, and he does a good job protecting the ball. The form on his jumper looks good, and he’s a willing rebounder and defender who moves his feet well (he wouldn’t be starting at DMC if he didn’t play defense).
Talan LaFrentz
Talan LaFrentz
A young combo guard with good size and a physical build, LaFrentz didn’t shoot it well in Denver’s loss to Crestwood, but he found other ways to contribute, finishing with 5 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and an assist. He uses his size and physicality to compete on the glass on both ends of the floor, is an active defender with good hands, and he keeps the ball moving on the offensive end. He looks like he’ll be a reliable shooting threat who can also put the ball on the floor and get to the rim.
