Then, on Saturday, I was in attendance for the final four games of the 2022 Champions of Character Classic at Grace College. This showcase featured Concord taking down East Noble, Center Grove remaining unbeaten against Fort Wayne Snider, Warsaw holding off South Bend St. Joseph, and Fort Wayne Blackhawk outlasting Chesterton in a great final game of the night. Now, let’s take a look at the top 2023 performers from these five games this week.
Carpenter is a tough 2023 point guard who uses his athleticism to make plays. He looks to get into the paint, and he always seems to finish in the lane. He also runs the point well with some nice passes. On the defensive end of the floor, he was very active and was always looking to jump the passing lanes. Carpenter finished with 6 points and 4 steals in a quiet game on the stat sheet, but he is the key player for the Patriots this season.
Highlights
Schmitz is a great shooter, but he got into foul trouble early in this one. He only played four minutes in the first half. In the second half, Schmitz started off with a triple, but he just couldn’t seem to get his footing. Schmitz is a great scorer both from three and the mid-range despite his off night on Friday. He is going to make a college team very happy just from his shooting.
Highlights
Wisley is a big post player who uses his length well on both ends. It was a quiet day overall, but Wisley showed some good skills in the post. He has good footwork and had a couple of nice post moves inside. On the defensive end of the floor, Wisley used his length both blocking shots and rebounding the basketball. Wisley finished with 6 points and 6 rebounds in the loss.

Ankney is a bigger guard that has committed to Indiana Wesleyan. He is insanely athletic, and he showed that off with some nice drives to the hole and a big throwdown near the end of the game. He also attacked the offensive glass with three offensive rebounds. Ankney is a natural scorer who is going to excel at Indiana Wesleyan. For now, he is going to be the key for Center Grove to keep up their undefeated season. Ankney ended with 19 points and 4 rebounds in the win.
McComb committed to Butler earlier this year as a walk-on. He is a high-IQ guard who can make an impact on any game in many different ways, and that is exactly what he did on Saturday. McComb is an aggressive rebounder and smart decision-maker. He also defends the ball incredibly well. McComb didn’t make a shot, but he grabbed 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals to have a good all-around game for the Trojans.

Gould is a bigger guard who will join Ankney at Indiana Wesleyan next season. He struggled shooting the ball early in this one, but he went on the attack and used his athleticism to get to the rim and finish inside. He is a very good player, and despite his semi-quiet game at 13 points and 5 rebounds, he was easily one of the best players on the floor. Gould is going to make a very big impact in the Crossroads League for years to come.
Highlights
Furst is a big post player who absolutely dominated the paint on Saturday night. He was a menace on the glass, and his touch in the paint is unstoppable. Furst had 25 points in the win over Chesterton including 12 in the fourth quarter as he basically put the game away late. He also grabbed 10 rebounds, 5 of which were offensive and had four easy putbacks. Despite not showing much of an outside shot, he should be an NAIA player next year for sure.
Sefton is a bigger shooting guard who is an incredibly talented scorer. He missed both of his attempts from the outside, but he dominated on the drive all game long. He is a tough player that can jump out of the gym. He is also a smart player with really good awareness. Sefton is committed to Grace College, and with all of his future college coaches in attendance to watch, he put on a show. He scored 20 points on 8-13 shooting and grabbed 5 rebounds in the narrow win over Chesterton.
