For the top unsigned seniors in Indiana’s Class of 2023 there are starting to be fewer and fewer opportunities to show themselves to college coaches. However, I’m still in contact with college coaches at every level on a daily basis who are looking for players. The Hoosier state still has plenty of talent to offer programs at just about any level. Division I to Division III, NAIA, or JUCO. Let’s highlight five wings that college coaches need to be seriously considering as the calendar gets ready to turn to 2023. If you missed it, check out the top five unsigned senior guards that we’ve already showcased.
Darrion Brooks Darrion Brooks 6'5" | SF New Haven | 2023 State IN (New Haven H.S.): This 6’5″ wing is ranked as the #46 overall prospect in the Class of 2023 by Prep Hoops Indiana. Brooks is a very good mid-range scorer, handles the ball well enough to create his own shot, and has the size and strength to finish at a high percentage around the basket. He rebounds his position very well and has the physical tools to have an upside defensively at the next level. Brooks is averaging 22 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. If I was any of the SIAC Division II programs I would be taking a hard look at this unsigned prospect. A lot of NAIA programs could certainly use his services as well.
Joey Brown Joey Brown 6'6" | SG North Central | 2023 State #280 Nation IN (North Central H.S.): Arguably the best unsigned prospect in the state regardless of position, Brown is a sure fire mid-major type of prospect. The 6’6″ wing has gotten a lot of MAC and Horizon League type of interest and should have more offers rolling in as we hit the new year. Brown handles the ball like a guard and can definitely serve as a secondary playmaker at the next level. He is an excellent passer, has a money jumper from the mid-range, and finishes very well with his length at the rim. Also one of the most versatile defenders remaining on the board in Indiana. MAC, Horizon, OVC, etc. coaches should be discussing Brown in their next recruiting meeting.
Jalen Hooks Jalen Hooks 6'6" | SF Warren Central | 2023 State #282 Nation IN (Warren Central H.S.): Hooks’ recruitment has been a long, winding road. Once ranked as a 4-star, Top 75 prospect with a number of high-major offers, the 6’6″ wing battled some injury issues, transferred to Donda Academy, and saw his interest dwindle. Now, he is back in the Hoosier state and tearing it up to start the season for Warren Central. The Warriors are 5-2 in large part due to their versatile wings presence. Hooks can attack closeouts off of the bounce, displays excellent court vision in transition, and can make open 3’s when he is set. He should be back on the radar of low and mid-major programs.
D.J. Moss D.J. Moss 6'4" | SF Gary 21st Century | 2023 State IN (Gary 21st Century): If you want physical tools, look no further than this 6’4″ wing out of Gary. Moss is extremely physical, has explosiveness at the rim, and can run the floor well in transition. The left-handed shooter will make catch-and-shoot 3’s at the next level, drives it left in a straight line, and rebounds as well as any non-big man in the state. He is a little bit of a tweener at the 3/4 position, but his physical tools and skill level allow him to slide around wherever you need him on both ends of the floor. Similar to Brooks, I would recommend him to SIAC Division II programs or a lot of NAIA schools, especially those that like to get up and down the floor.
Spencer White Spencer White 6'5" | SF Carmel | 2023 State IN (Carmel H.S.): I’ve long been high on this 6’4″ prospect out of Carmel ranked #34 in the Class of 2023 by Prep Hoops Indiana. White is an excellent catch-and-shoot threat from beyond the arc, has good size on the wing, and displays a high basketball IQ on both ends of the floor. Like I tell college coaches a lot, kids from Carmel are typically more ready than other freshmen because of how they practice and the level of competition they play throughout their careers. Division or NAIA programs still looking for a shooter should take a long, hard look at White.
