For the top unsigned seniors in Indiana’s Class of 2023 there are starting to be fewer and fewer opportunities to show themselves to college coaches. However, I’m still in contact with college coaches at every level on a daily basis who are looking for players. The Hoosier state still has plenty of talent to offer programs at just about any level. Division I to Division III, NAIA, or JUCO. Let’s highlight five guards that college coaches need to be seriously considering as the calendar gets ready to turn to 2023.
Luke Almodovar Luke Almodovar 6'2" | SG Noblesville | 2023 State IN (Noblesville H.S.): This smooth, left-handed scorer is putting together an excellent senior season 5-1 Noblesville. Almodovar is averaging 16.6 points per game currently and has helped move the Millers into the Class 4A Top 10 rankings. He holds scholarship offers from the likes of Ohio Dominican, Saint Francis, and Judson. Ranked as the #36 prospect in the Class of 2023 by Prep Hoops Indiana, Almodovar is one that should be looked at closely by any Division II or high-level NAIA program.
Ahmere Carson Ahmere Carson 6'2" | PG Anderson | 2023 State IN (Anderson H.S.): There is no denying the pure scoring ability of Carson. He is a threat to go for 30 or 40 points any time he steps on the floor. A strong, 6’2″ left-handed guard, Carson is an excellent shooter who can create for himself at a high level. He is a high-volume scorer, but can get hot in a hurry. When handling the ball he doesn’t get sped up, plays through contact well, and simply has a knack for putting the ball in the basket. Holds offers from Wisconsin-Milwaukee and South Carolina State. Definitely has the talent for many low-major programs.
Anthony Dancler Anthony Dancler 6'2" | SG Southport | 2023 State IN (Southport H.S.): After missing the end of his junior season and all summer with an injury, Dancler is back healthy and playing very well for a 6-2 Southport team. He is an excellent shooter, both off the catch and creating off of the dribble, and is capable of playing either guard spot in the backcourt. Starting to regain a lot of low-to-mid-major interest as coaches are once again able to see him on the floor. His pure shooting ability really separates him from some of the other unsigned guards in Indiana. If I was a MAC school still in need of a guard in 2023, or a school at that level, I would be getting involved with Dancler.
Sheridan Sharp Sheridan Sharp 6'2" | PG Ben Davis | 2023 State IN (Ben Davis H.S.): Sharp is a winner. Plain and simple. He is the type of kid who, as a product of playing at Ben Davis, will likely be more ready than other incoming freshman. The long, thin point guard is an excellent two-way prospect. He can make any pass on the floor without getting sped up, pressures the ball as well as anyone in the state, and is explosive enough to finish up around the rim at the end of his drives. Has offers from the likes of IUPUI, Nicholls State, and Incarnate Word. Any low-major program that needs a winning point guard should offer Sharp immediately.
Ashton Williamson Ashton Williamson 6'2" | PG Gary 21st Century | 2023 State #287 Nation IN (Gary 21st Century): It is hard to find a more dynamic point guard than this 6’1″ playmaker. Williamson is lightening quick with the ball in his hand, in attack mode at all times, and will create offense for you all by himself. He is a triple-double threat every time he steps on the floor with excellent court vision and rebounding ability from the guard spot. Very explosive getting to the rim off of the dribble. Any low-major program that needs a true playmaker should be taking a long, hard look at this point guard from Gary.
