SoCal Winter Prep Standouts (Part 1)

Southern California Academy's post grad team put on their first event, the Winter Prep Showcase, featuring some of the top post grad teams in the LA area. There were multiple teams and coaches in attendance, and tons of talent we already knew about and tons of under the radar talent as well. Here's a look at part one of the standouts from the event.   Carlin Davison | 6'6” WF | SoCal Black 2023   <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://prephoops.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2022/12/Davison-Carlin.jpg"><img src="https://prephoops.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2022/12/Davison-Carlin.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-1692496" /></a></figure>   Davison is a native of New Zealand who has come over and quickly become one of the most intriguing overall players in post grad basketball. At 6'6” he's a Swiss-army knife of a player who can do a little bit of everything on the offensive end as a playmaker and scorer, he's an excellent rebounder with a good motor and he can guard and play almost every position on the floor. He asserted his dominance throughout the event and showed a lot of tools that are intriguing moving forward.   Robert Davis | 6'6” WG | SoCal Black 2023   <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://prephoops.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2022/12/Davis-Robert-Certified.jpg"><img src="https://prephoops.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2022/12/Davis-Robert-Certified.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-1692497" /></a></figure>   Davis has had a terrific start to the season so far, and the UMass commit continued that in LA with a couple of tough performances and showed his ability to score the ball in a number of different ways. He's a knock down shooter with great range and a quick release, he knows how draw contact and gets to the line often and he can put it on the deck and get to spots. He has that unusual ability to get it going and completely take over games, and he will only continue to get better moving forward.   Makaih Williams | 6'2” PG | SoCal Black 2023   <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://prephoops.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2022/12/Williams-Makhai.jpg"><img src="https://prephoops.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2022/12/Williams-Makhai.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-1692498" /></a></figure>   Williams will at times get overlooked on this team with all of the talent they have, but the Wyoming commit plays a huge role for them as their floor general and the calming presence who sets the tone on both ends of the floor. He handles pressure well and doesn't get sped up, he has good vision and passing ability in multiple ways and he picks his spots and can score it efficiently from multiple levels. He will be critical in their success moving forward.   Ernest Locmelis | 6'4” WG | SoCal Gray 2023   <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://prephoops.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2022/12/Locmelis-Ernest.jpg"><img src="https://prephoops.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2022/12/Locmelis-Ernest.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-1692499" /></a></figure>   Locmelis started the event off with a bang, going off against Xima Prep for 22 points and showing a lot of intriguing qualities, and he has the option to take an extra year if he wants to. He has a good frame with above average athleticism and strength, he can knock down shots from deep and when he gets downhill he can finish through traffic and in the midrange. He's an under the radar player who has a lot of upside moving forward and could be a steal at the next level.   Flavio Kolmann | 6'3” WG | SoCal Gray 2023   Kolmann had a very good showing in SoCal Gray's close loss to Frohlic, as he showed a mixed bag of being able to score it in multiple ways and impressive athleticism as well. He made shots from deep off the catch, he got downhill and finished through contact, he played above the rim in transition and he made plays on the defensive end too. He is a name that coaches should keep an eye on moving forward.   Davis White | 6'3” WG | SoCal Red 2023   White played both with the Red and the Black team at times in the event, and he has a lot of tools you look for in a two guard at the next level. At 6'3” he has decent size with a good frame and is a good defender who plays with a good motor, he's a knock down shooter from deep with good range and consistency and he's a good secondary ball handler who doesn't make mistakes and makes good decisions. He can play multiple roles and brings a lot of winning aspects to his team.   Jalen Vazquez | 6'2” CG | SoCal Red 2023   Vazquez had one of the most impressive showings in their win over Xima Prep on the second day, as he went off for 30 points showing that he can get hot and take over games with his scoring ability. At 6'2” he played both on and off the basketball, he showed the ability to get out in transition and make plays off the bounce, he shot the ball very well from deep hitting 7 three-pointers and he was a good on ball defender who hounded ball handlers too.
