But in the shadow of this event, Christ the King hosted the NY Hoops Festival where some of the best talent from the area came to compete.
Here are 5 notable players from the Archbishop Stepinac vs St. Peters game:
Benjamin Lyttle Benjamin Lyttle 6'5" | PF Stepinac | 2023 State NY (6’5”, Senior, Forward, Stepinac): Benjamin is a big and strong wing player. When Ben has the ball in his hands, his first thought is about how to use his body to attack the basket and initiate contact. Ben is a tenacious rebounder who always looks to get put backs or grab a big board over a defender.
Danny Carbuccia Danny Carbuccia 6'1" | PG Stepinac | 2025 State #59 Nation NY (6′, Sophomore, Guard, Stepinac): Danny has a killer mentality towards the game. He is constantly looking to push the ball and bang bodies with much bigger defenders. Towards the end of the game, despite only being a sophomore, his team was down and all of his teammates looked towards him to make clutch plays down the stretch. Danny has a high motor, finishes at the rim at an elite level and shows signs of shooting potential through his free throw shooting.
Boogie Fland (6’3”, Junior, Guard, Stepinac): Boogie is a top prospect in the state and for good reason. It doesn’t take much more than a minute to notice Boogie’s lightning quick speed. Boogie has the ball on a string and uses his combination of handles and speed to make plays in transition. Both in terms of form and accuracy, Boogie’s shot looks great. As Boogie continues to grow as a player he will find ways to use his talents on the defensive end of the game.
Qadir Martin Qadir Martin 6'6" | SF St Peters | 2024 State NY (6’6”, Junior, Center, St. Peters): Qadir was the biggest, strongest and most athletic player out on the court. Qadir used his high motor to grab big defensive rebounds, run out in transition and finish in the paint. It was refreshing to see that Qadir’s focus was not to impress anyone at the tournament, it was to do what his team needed to win the game against a big rival and it paid off. It’s not often that young players like Qadir know how to take advantage of their elite athleticism but Qadir is always hunting a mismatch. Pictured above you can see Qadir winning a much deserved award for player of the game.
Mike Spitso (5’8”, Junior, Guard, St. Peters): What Mike lacks in size he makes up for in IQ and skill. Mike ran the team as a skilled pass first point guard that knew the delicate balancing act of getting all of his teammates involved while also finding the opportunity to get his own. If you leave Mike open for even a split second, he will make you pay. Mike is not dazzlingly quick but he has excellent handles and finesse which allows him to slash into the paint and finish. Mike played nearly the entire game and showed little signs of slowing down by the end.
