On a very light Wednesday night around the state, we at Prep Hoops Indiana still always find the best game to cover. That mission took us to the Fort Wayne area for this matchup between host New Haven and a young, talented Fort Wayne Wayne squad. From the opening tip the Generals explosive backcourt was locked in. The three-headed monster of [player_tooltip player_id='1556502' first='Monte' last='Smith'], [player_tooltip player_id='1578417' first='Jevon' last='Lewis'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1297001' first='Chase' last='Barnes'] combined for 14 of Wayne's 16 points in the first quarter to establish an early lead. They would never fully pull away from New Haven, but they did maintain that lead for the vast majority of the game coming away with a 69-62 victory. Fort Wayne Wayne is now 4-1 on the young season while the loss dropped the Bulldogs to 1-4.

After the hot start by the Generals guards, New Haven senior wing [player_tooltip player_id='868222' first='Darrion' last='Brooks'] answered in the second quarter. Brooks put up 11 points in the period to keep the Bulldogs in the game at 36-32 going into the halftime break. Keeping with the theme of a single player dominating each quarter, Wayne's senior guard [player_tooltip player_id='1556502' first='Monte' last='Smith'] dropped 11 of his own in the third to build a little bit more cushion taking a 52-44 lead to the final period. The Bulldogs had one more late run left in them cutting it to as few as four points after forcing a couple of back-to-back turnovers. However, Wayne did just enough to hold on down the stretch to escape with the road win.

It was [player_tooltip player_id='1556502' first='Monte' last='Smith'] who led the way for Fort Wayne Wayne with 23 points including 15 in the second half. Junior guard [player_tooltip player_id='1578417' first='Jevon' last='Lewis'] chipped in with 12 points while Marquette Lee added 10 points to round out the Generals scorers in double-figures.

For New Haven, [player_tooltip player_id='868222' first='Darrion' last='Brooks'] scored a game-high 25 points to go with 7 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. The 6'4" wing is really smooth on the offensive end and can definitely make an impact for a college program somewhere. I haven't heard anything about his recruitment, but it will be interesting to see where he ends up. A lot of talent and potential. JoJo Robertson and Mylan Graham added 11 and 10 points respectively for the Bulldogs.
