For the more traditional readers, we will be doing a preview of All State teams by classifications too. While most VHSL All State teams have two teams with 8 players on each, we have decided to simply list some of the players we expect to be on the team at the end of the season.
With that being said, here’s a look at part one of our picks for VHSL Class 6 All State candidates, looking at six players we expect to be in the conversation.
POY: Greg Jones Greg Jones 6'5" | SF Hayfield | 2023 State #258 Nation VA | 6’6” WF | Hayfield 2023
Jones was an All State selection last year and just missed out on player of the year, and if Hayfield can repeat as state champions I think they will have to give him Player of the Year. The 6’6” wing is the ultimate leader and has this group locked in, he has great length and athleticism to make plays defensively and at the rim, he is a very good playmaker for his size and he’s improved his shooting immensely over the last year. He’s going to do whatever it takes to help his team win and that’s why he gets the nod for Player of the Year.
David King David King 6'3" | PF Hayfield | 2023 State VA | 6’4” F | Hayfield 2023
King was a First Team All State selection last season for the state champs, and there really is no way to emphasize the importance the Marymount commit has on his team. He’s the ultimate glue guy who plays much bigger than his height would suggest in the post, he has fantastic timing and is always around the basket and the basketball and he is one of the most efficient players around the rim in the state.
Jayden Harris Jayden Harris 6'8" | SG Potomac Va | 2023 State VA | 6’4” WG | Potomac 2023
Harris is set for a big senior season for a Potomac team that will be a very tough out for anyone this year, and after the summer he had I wouldn’t be surprised if he was a top scorer in the state. The smooth 6’4” lefty has a knack for scoring the ball in transition and in the half court, he can make shots from all three levels and knows how to create space and he can hit tough shots and he’s an athletic finisher around the rim when he gets downhill too.
Paul Anderson Paul Anderson 6'3" | SG South County | 2023 State VA | 6’4” WF | South County 2023
Anderson is set for a big senior season for a South County team that will be competing in the toughest classification this year, and if he can lead them to a state tournament appearance it will be hard to not see him on First Team. The 6’4” wing has great positional size and is a big time athlete who plays above the rim in transition and makes plays defensively, he can score it from all three levels and is good coming off of screens and getting set and he can post up and scores well in the post too.
Margad Choijilsuren Margad Choijilsuren 6'4" | CG Fairfax | 2023 State VA | 6’4” WG | Fairfax 2023
Choijilsuren was a First Team All State selection last year for a Fairfax team that had a good season, and this year they should be even better and he’s likely going to be in the conversation for Player of the Year if they have a successful season. The 6’4” wing is a fundamentally sound scorer who can knock it down at a high clip from deep and with deep range, he’s a pogo stick athlete in transition and he can hit an array of difficult shots while playing within the system.
Nasir Coleman | 5’10” PG | Patriot 2023
Coleman was a First Team All State selection last year after leading Patriot to an undefeated regular season and a run to the state semifinals, and he’s back with another Patriot team that should compete with the best of them. The 5’10” guard is a true floor general who controls the pace and sets the tone on both ends of the floor, he can touch the paint at will where he’s a good playmaker and a good finisher over taller defenders and he simply makes winning plays on both ends of the floor.
