Continue ReadingThe football season is past us and we now turn our focus to basketball. In this article, we are checking out All-State football players from 11-man teams in South Dakota. This is a fun way to recognize multi-sport athletes and promote the basketball season. SD boys basketball teams will start practicing on Monday, November 28th. Hoops season is here! Let’s take a quick look at the All-State football performers….

All-State 11AAA
Football record: 12-0 and State Champions! The talented Mr. Ashley threw for 2,279 yards and 30 TD’s. Taylen also ran for 385 yards and 5 TD’s. Ashley is committed USF for hoops. He is one of the best PG’s in South Dakota. Taylen is amazing in the open court, he makes everyone better, and he is a winner! Expect Ashley and the Cavs to be back in the State Tournament in March and who knows, they may even get to the State Championship. Make sure you check out Taylen and the Cavs this season, you will not be disappointed.
Highlights
Football record: 12-0 and State Champions! Wilde was All-State last year as well. He has committed to SDSU for football. Wilde caught 46 passes for 946 yards and 10 TD’s. Wilde also had 22 tackles and 2 INT’s on D, he was a lockdown CB. Last season in hoops, Wilde averaged 12.6 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2 apg, and 2 spg. Expect those numbers to increase this season and for the Cavs to be a top team in AA. He is very good in transition, attacking off the bounce, and he can also knock down triples.
Football record: 12-0 and State Champions! It looks like Giblin is a D2 football recruit. Beau was a great DB this season with 54 tackles, 5 INT’s, 3 TFL’s, and 2 defensive touchdowns. He was a playmaker for the Jefferson D and the leader of that scary unit. In hoops, Giblin is a tough defender that can lockup top talent. Beau can score points off the bounce and hit jumpers. Giblin and the Cavs are going to be a fun team to watch this winter.
Football record: 3-7. Just like in basketball, Mandalla is a tough defender. He finished the year with 41.5 tackles and 6 INT’s. In hoops, Mandalla will be one of the best defenders in AA. He is a big and strong athlete. I like his playmaking ability in transition and his unselfishness. Look out for the Warriors!
Honorable Mention 11AAA
All-State 11AA
Football record: 12-0 and State Champs! Kienholz put up crazy and eye-popping numbers. He has won multiple State Championships and he is a generational talent. Lincoln is committed to Washington for football but he will be taking a visit to Ohio State this weekend. In hoops, Kienholz was 1st Team All-State last season. As a Power5 level athlete, Kienholz is a crazy dunker and he can get is jump shot off anytime. Lincoln and the Govs will be one of the most entertaining teams in SD to watch this winter.
Football record: 4-6. Tyan had a dynamic season as a WR with 793 receiving yards and 12 TD’s. In hoops, Buus has all the skills and tools to be an All-State type player. Tyan is a fierce defender with a high hoops IQ. He is a team-first player but he can also put up points. Buus is a selfless hooper that will be a DUDE this season.
Football record: 12-0 and State Champs! Zabel is an impressive athlete that caught 54 passes and 13 TD’s. In hoops, Zabel is a jack-of-all-trades. He is a workhorse of a defender, an aggressive rebounder, and an emerging offensive threat. Zabel is going to have a breakout season this winter for the Govs.
Football record: 12-0 and State Champs! He was the center for the high powered Governor offense. Busch was All-State last year as well. Christian looks like a promising football prospect. In hoops, Busch is a strong and physical forward that will do whatever his team needs on the court. He also has a good looking jump shot that should keep defenses honest.
Football record 6-5. The All-Star QB threw for 2,645 and 25 TD’s. He also rushed for 723 yards and 14 TD’s. Rugby was also All-State last season. In hoops, Rugby is a do-it-all player and a great leader. Ryken is a skilled guard that can score at every level and he makes everyone around him better. Rugby has the skill and talent to be an All-State player in basketball as well.
Football record: 10-2. He played a key role in the Titans second place finish. Reis “The Bulldog” Kirschenman often looked like a man amongst boys on the football field. Reis is committed to SDSU for football. In basketball, Reis is going to be a headache for opposing teams. He will be one of the best rebounders in SD this winter. He is an ultra-physical post player that will be an animal around the hoop. I pity the post players that will have to go up against Kirschenman this winter.
Football record: 10-2. He played a key role in the Titans second place finish. Thompson was a dominant player on the gridiron. Blake had 34 tackles, 8 INT’s, and 9 breakups. On the offensive end, Thompson ran for 980 yards and 14 TD’s! He missed last season with an injury but will be ready to roll this winter. Blake is a super quick guard with big scoring ability. Beware of Thompson, he can take over a game in a heartbeat. Thompson and Tea will are going to have a fantastic season.
Honorable Mention 11AA
Football record 10-2. The Titans finished the season with a loss in the State Championship to Pierre. Smythe missed last basketball season because of a leg injury. After an All-State football season, Jackson should be ready to contribute to the basketball team. He is a physical player and an all-around positive asset to have on the floor. Smythe and the Titans are going to be tough this year.
All-State 11A
Football record: 3-7. Porter had a rockstar football season as a WR. Ihnen had 764 receiving yards and he caught 13 TD’s. Porter was an All-State basketball player last season. This summer, Ihnen proved that he has D1 type talent. Porter is a high-octane scorer and high-volume rebounder. Expect the long lefty to have a fantastic junior season and for the Orioles for be one of the top squads in Class A.
Football record: 12-0 and State Champs! Brayden was a ball-hawking DB with 42 tackles and 3 INT’s. He was All-State last season as well. Speaking of All-State, Pankonen was selected 2nd team All-State last spring for basketball. Brayden is a lightning quick SG and one of the top 3-point shooters in SD. Brayden is a playmaker on both ends of the floor and the Quarriers are a top 5 team in Class A.
Football record: 6-4. Rosenquist was a STUD on the football field with 86 tackles, 7 break-ups, 1 sack, and 3 INT’s. Randy was also great on offense as a WR. In hoops, Randy was All-State last season, he lead the Panthers to a perfect season, and a State Championship. Rosenquist put up 13.2 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 7.2 apg, and 4.7 spg last season. He is an elite PG and a top-notch defender on and off the ball. Expect Randy an the Panthers to be back at the State Tournament in March.
Football record: 7-4. He was a lockdown DB with 42 tackles, 9 break-ups, 8 INT’s, 3 pick 6’s, and 1 forced fumble. Snyder is a smart player on the field and on the hardwood. Cole is a skilled guard and a deadly shooter from deep. He might be young but he is a big time shooter. Cole and the Chargers are going to be very good this year and they will have a very good chance of getting back to State.
Football record: 5-5. Anderson was a STAR all over the football field. Anderson is a next-level athlete that will have his choice to play college ball in football or basketball. Last season Matt averaged 13 ppg and 8 rpg. Anderson is amazing in transition and a dynamic above-the-rim finisher. He scores from every level and Anderson is a complete lockdown defender.
Highlights
Football record: 6-4. Hennies had an outstanding season as a WR for the Panthers. Jaxon had 38 receptions, 574 receiving yards and 6 TD’s. Last hoops season, Hennies and the Panthers went undefeated and won the Class A State Championship. Hennies had a great offseason in AAU hoops and he will be ready to tear it up this winter. Hennies and the Panthers are the favorites once again to win the State Crown in Class A.
Honorable Mention 11A
Football record: 8-3. He was a playmaker on the gridiron as a quarterback and safety. Tate is also a special basketball player. He had a great offseason in the weight room and he will come into the winter season as a bigger, stronger, and faster athlete. Tate can play above the rim, score from mid-lane, and hit 3’s from deep. VanOtterloo is also an athletic and gritty defender. Expect a huge senior season from this Watchdog.
All-State 11B
Football record: 8-2. He is looking like a highly sought after football recruit. Reed rushed for 21 TD’s and threw for 4. He also led the team in tackles. Rus was All-State last season as well. Reed is not just a standout in football, he is also excellent hoops. Last basketball season, Rus averaged 20.5 ppg, 10 rpg, 4 apg, and 2.8 spg. Expect him to put on a show all winter. Rus is an All-State talent in basketball and he is going to make a ton of noise.
Football record: 5-4. He was a productive player as both a WR and RB. Arend was All-State last season as well. Sutton is a baller that is going to have a monster basketball season. Last year, Arend averaged 18.3 ppg, 9 rpg, 2 apg, 2 spg, and shot 45 FG%. He is a stat stuffer and the Huskies are going to be one of the best teams in Class B. Bridgewater-Emery is going to be a “must watch” team this winter.
Football record: 8-2. As a TE, Gavin showed that he is a lethal weapon downfield and he was also a very good blocker for the Cardinals. In hoops, Benck is a skilled player and a smart passer. Gavin can score from all over the court, is a physical defender, and an all-around productive player. Deuel is going to have a very nice squad this year and I think that they will surprise some people. The Cards will be a team that nobody wants to meet in March.
Football record: 12-0 and State Champs! Fornia is a 6’4″ 260 lb beast. Chace was a force on the football field. In hoops, he is BIG. strong, tough, and gritty. You do not want to mess with this Huskie. Fornia can put the clamps on talented offensive players. He is also a productive rebounder. Chace will likely be a double-double dude all season long.
Football record: 11-1 (2nd at State). He was also an All-State basketball player last spring. Volmer is a high class leader and a winner. Blake is an opportunistic and smart playmaker. Volmer can do it all on the hardwood. He is skilled, smart, and a clutch performer. Plan on the Warriors getting back to State this spring.
Highlights
Football record: 9-1. He will be playing college football at SDSU next season. Jackson is a strong and special athlete. Aberdeen Christian is going to be super talented in hoops this winter and Jackson will be a key player. I expect Isakson and Aberdeen Christian to be back to State this spring.
Honorable Mention 11B
Football record: 9-2. In hoops he was a DUDE as a frosh, he will be a STUD from here on out. Katzer scorer 11.9 ppg last season. Expect him to average closer to 20 this year. Boston is super strong and his work ethic is second to none. With his height, strength, and athleticism, Katzer is a major matchup problem. This kid is going to have a memorable sophomore season!
Football record: 4-4. In hoops, Huber is a lockdown defender that can slow down the top guards in the state. He averaged 10+ ppg last year and I would expect those numbers to shoot up this season. Trey is a quick player and an absolute dog on both ends of the floor. The Cyclones are a scary team, make sure you check them out this winter!
