Davon has the potential to be a breakout player in the Minneapolis City Conference this winter. In multiple viewings this fall he’s impressed me with his explosiveness and effort on both ends of the floor. He helped lead North to a big win over Fridley mixing in a pair of transition dunks with a few tough finishes at the rim. Runs the floor hard to open up dunking opportunities in transition, but also has the ability to blow by his man off the dribble in the half-court. Defensively he’s an asset because of his quick feet, long arms to get up in passing lanes, and also his ability to slide over and contest shots at the rim as a help-side defender.

With a few key players struggling for East Ridge, Jackson stepped up with a solid contribution on the offensive end. He knows who he is as a player, and because of that it allows him to play with efficiency on the offensive end. Jackson isn’t going to try to blow by you off the dribble, and instead will stay active off the ball and work for openings from beyond the arc. Once he gets that opening he doesn’t miss often, and against Holy Family it resulted in four made triples. Senior guard who’s going to hit his shots and give you effort on the defensive end every night.
Lee looks like an improved player from last season, and he made some nice contributions in his five-man unit for Totino-Grace. Even though his role on offense will likely be limited, he showed some nice defensive potential against BSM. He was picking up their best guard and applying constant ball pressure. Even against one of the shiftiest guards in the state he had success sticking tight on the ball, and had some nice contests when his man looked to pull-up, forcing some difficult shots that resulted in stops for his team. Scrappy defender whose contributions on that end of the floor could help earn him some minutes this winter.

This Mahtomedi guard group is absolutely loaded, and on Sunday they were firing on all cylinders. Everyone seemed to be playing at a high level including Cole who made some big plays on both ends of the floor. He showcased more explosiveness than I knew he had, including a two hand dunk and three blocks on the defensive end. In the second half he defended Columbia Heights’ best player, and blocked two of his pull-up jumper attempts with his tight on-ball defense. Cole provided effort on the glass on both ends of the floor, and has good vision to pull in a rebound and spot one of his teammates flying up the floor.

Jordan brings a ton of size and physicality to the floor for Minneapolis North. Right away when he subbed in he caught the ball on the block and just bullied his defender before laying it up with ease. He’s still pretty raw, but if you leave him isolated on the block he can back his man down and earn high percentage looks with ease. Defensively he’s tough to move off the block, and provides a shot blocking threat due to his size and quick leaping ability. Not the most explosive but times his jumps well and goes straight up to get a piece of the ball without fouling much.
Peter will have the ability to play either guard spot for East Ridge this year, and possesses one of the best pull-up jumpers you’ll find in the metro area. He has the quickness to get to his spots off the dribble, and with seemingly just a few inches of space is able to elevate into his jumper from mid-range or three. Is someone you have to go over screens when guarding because if you go under he’s just going to stop and pop from deep and hit at a solid percentage. Will be relied upon for heavy minutes in the East Ridge backcourt this winter.
AJ McCleery
AJ McCleery
AJ was a nightmare in transition against Columbia Heights. He runs the floor hard without the ball, and when the ball is in his hands he’s always scanning the floor to make the right play. Can hit his man with a last second pass if a defender steps up on him, but when no one’s in his way AJ has the touch to extend and finish at the rim going full speed. McCleery has a very smooth game and never seems to get sped up. Has the ability to create space for a jumper on the perimeter, or curl off a screen and attack the basket to finish.
