Conference Commentary
Top Ten in State Potential: Mountain Lake-Comfrey, Southwest Christian
With two starters back and a really nice junior class, Mountain Lake-Comfrey will not slip too much from their 23-7 season. There are roles to fill but we think they can finish with a very similar record. And if things go really well? Top ten could be in their view.
So what about Southwest Minnesota Christian? The Eagles lost four starters and a big group of quality seniors. They do return an all league player and have solid guards, plus they have the potential to have a huge frontline if guys have improved, but there are a lot of questions here. With Mountain Lake-Comfrey having a bit more back we give them an edge, especially considering how close the SWMC and MLC games were last year.
Compete with Most: Richard Javier Tavarez Richard Javier Tavarez 5'10" | PG MN /Ellsworth, Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda, Hills-Beaver Creek, Red Rock Central, Westbrook Walnut Grove, Murray County Central
The Dragons won only five games last year but with their all league point guard back along with experience we believe that they should take a step forward. Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda will be solid be wonder if they lost too much from last season to be a .500 squad. Sawyer Drent is very good, but he needs some roles to be filled around him for his team to take a step. Hills-Beaver Creek isn’t in a rebuild or anything as they were a solid team last year. We just aren’t sure they have enough experience and returning production to be over .500 in the league once again. With three/four starters back Red Rock Central should be better than a one win team. They have some size and toughness that should get them near that ten win mark overall for the season.
If there is a team from this group that could make the jump to the other group it’s Westbrook Walnut Grove. Remember they upset Southwest Minnesota Christian in the playoffs last year and they have three very good players coming back. MCC finished third in the league last year and we think they could be a contender for the title. With a pair of all league guys back and several experienced role players ready for even more, the Rebels should have a really good year.
Rebuilding: Edgerton
Edgerton was young last year, and they will have just one senior this year. They should certainly be better than one win because they have players that have been through the process.
