It was my first time being able to watch Malachi in person and he didn’t disappoint. Has exceptional guard like skills for being 6-10 especially leading the break. Great touch around the rim, can finish with either hand. Can put the ball on the floor and drive either direction and finish. Very effective operating from the elbows. His best skill in my opinion is his passing – Great using his size to see over defenders and hiting cutters. VERY fluid athlete and can get up and down in transition. Next step for him is keep improving his jump shot and getting stronger as his body fills out. Big time prospect.
Vince is a versatile strong wing that can play any of the guard positions. Did a great job getting to the rim at ease and finishing thru contact. Didn’t make a ton of shots but could tell he has a knack of scoring the basketball. Made a couple impressive floaters. I like his strength and ability to create mismatches, especially in the post. Great in transition. Another impressive prospect.
Highlights
Burrell is a small, quick PG that sets the tempo for them. Likes to push in transition and get guys involved. Has a good shot and made a couple 3’s. Has the ability to be disruptive on defense with his lateral quickness and quick hands. Needs to be a guy they can rely on to bring energy.
Martin had a solid practice. Put pressure on the defense making all the right places. Did a good job getting to the paint kicking out to shooters. Was always in the right spot defensively and active in passing lanes. Crafty finisher around the rim.
Richardson is the x-factor in my opinion for them this season. Elite shooter that can score both off the catch and dribble. Tough, plays with an edge and had a high motor all practice. Caught defenders sleeping by cutting hard. If he can build off last season and get them 12 to 15 ppg, they will be hard to beat.
Blunt was one of the more impressive players at practice. Extremely high motor and was active on both ends. Great in transition and getting to the rim. Was always in attack mode trying to get to the paint and either finish or find others. Transfer from Bourbon county, will be his first season playing for Great Crossing.
Highlights
Skaggs is a versatile wing that will bring them a ton of experience to them this season after averaging 8.9 ppg at Madison Central last season. Has great size and strength to finish thru contact and defend both guards and bigs. Another x-factor for them this season that will be someone they can rely heavily on as the young talent continues to develop.
Takeaway: Great Crossing is loaded with talent. Although they have highly touted players in Moreno, Dawson and Godfrey, I believe the combination of Blunt / Skaggs / Richardson will be a major deciding factor how the season will end up for them. If those three can be steady and give them 30 or so points per game, they will be extremely difficult to beat. Godfrey didn’t participate in practice due to an illness.
