The conference, who the majority of the members are the bigger schools in Southeast Ohio, typically makes up one of the top spots when looking at the Southeast District as a whole. Hillsboro was the team to watch in 2021 and McClain was the team last year. Determining this season’s top team could be a challenge as the conference could be slightly down.
- 1. Jackson– Ironmen weren’t the best team in season last year, dealing with injuries and just not playing consistent basketball. Nonetheless, they ended up in the District Finals before falling to powerhouse Waverly. Looking to 2022-23, the hope is Jackson can stay healthy throughout the season, but they also return the most impact guys compared to the rest of the conference. Boston Campbell (Jr) has a great year last season and it showed with an All-District finish. Jacob Winters (Sr) also returns and is one of the better athletes as well and is committed to Ohio University for football. The conference beat each other up last year and I could see this season being very much the same. But if Winters plays and the Ironmen stay healthy, they could take the conference title.
- 2. Chillicothe– The Cavaliers are the biggest school in the conference and have more guys to choose from compared to the rest of the member schools. This season, the Cavs also have the best athlete in the conference returning in LSU football commit Tayvion Galloway (Jr). The 6’5 wing/big is a straight problem when it comes to matchups and can affect the game in a variety of ways. Chillicothe was the 2nd best team in the conference a year ago and can do it again this year as long as Galloway ends up playing. If he does not, the Cavaliers could end up dropping slightly.
- 3. Washington Court House– The Lions have the next best athlete slated to return in Tanner Lemaster (Sr). Widely considered one of the best TE prospects in the state, Lemaster is commited to Kentucky for football and at 6’6, will also cause problems for opponents. The Lions lose their backcourt leader however (Reico Coulter) and could take a drop due to that loss. Assuming Lemaster plays this upcoming season, Washington CH could be a team worth watching, especially when they face Chillicothe.
- 4. McClain– The Tigers had the best postseason success last year winning a District title, but they now lose their top 3 from that team, including 2 All-District players and now must look to reload in a year where athleticism and size is likely the top of the league.
- 5. Miami Trace– Struggled last year only winning 5 games, but did find ways to win in the conference, including once over Hillsboro. Bring back their top guy in Andrew Guthrie (Sr), a Campbell football commit and 6’8 Center. Assuming Guthrie plays this year, this should be enough to edge Hillsboro out.
- 6. Hillsboro– Indians had a solid year last season, but now move forward without their top 2 guys from that team. This group was up-and-down last year and while they won against the top half of the conference, they also struggled quite a bit. Losing that talent and knowing that inconsistency makes it hard to keep them very high.
