On Saturday afternoon, many of SoCal’s top programs played at Palisades High School in the Bring Your Game Battle at the Beach. Prep Hoops takes a look at the standout wing players from the event.
No fear in his game. Matched up against a national ranked Southern California Academy team, Brown was up for the challenge and came out swinging. The 6’6″ wing was on fire early on and started the game with five straight 3’s in the first half. He displayed the ability to create off the dribble from outside and also catch and shoot. Brown has limitless range on his 3 and is able to hit NBA range if he wanted to. His elite shot making ability opened up the rest of his game as he was able to jab and use counters to get to the hole where he finished with athletic off hand layups and acrobatic layups. On defense, Brown also showed extra effort as he had to crash and help inside against the much bigger Bodo, Fielder, and the rest of the SCA front court depth. Brown is a surefire D1 talent and is a big part of why Rancho Christian has taken a leap back into one of the elite teams in Southern California.
While he is listed at 6’4″ Hunt plays more like a 6’7″ wing. The Venice swingman had a very impressive showing against Mission Viejo. He is one of those players who doesn’t force the issue and lets the game come to him. Hunt started the first half by finding holes in the opposing defense and getting to the rim. He utilizes a euro step and also a hop step to get to the paint and finishes after a pump or with a scoop. Hunt has a lot of patience and waits for the defense to jump or make a mistake and counters right away. In the 2nd half, he showed his ability to hit the outside shot as well. Hunt finished with the game winner and also player of the game.
Part of Rancho Christian’s 1-2 punch in the huge upset win against SCA. Alongside with his counterpart Rodney Brown Rodney Brown 6’6″ | CG Rancho Christian | 2023 State #163 Nation CA-S , Patton came up huge time and time again especially in the clutch where he had answers for every Southern California bucket. Patton is a 3 level scorer who can also move without the ball. He has elite level athleticism as displayed with a huge dunk in the 2nd half which kept the momentum going for his team. Has some Paul George-like moves in his game where he got to the rim, shielded off the defender and finished with his left. Very impressive scorer who can shoot the catch and shoot 3 ball or get to the rim. On defense, the 6’8″ wing has great hands and did a great job boxing out the SCA bigs. Love his game, Patton is a D1 talent.
Esteban Mann

If running lanes and cutting hard is a lost art in today’s game, then it isn’t evident when watching Mann. The 6’6″ Washington Prep wing ran the floor like there was no tomorrow and left it all on the floor. Coaches can appreciate someone with his high motor, heart, and hustle. Playing on a very undersized team, Mann had to play the front court role and showed no problems doing it. He ran from rim to rim and boxed out and used his body to grab loose balls on defense and finish on offense. In addition to his hustle and effort, Mann also showed that he could shoot the ball as well. He hit a couple from mid range and also from 3. The skills to play on the wing are there and having to play in a system where he’s the 3-5 helps illustrates his toughness and make him even more of a coaches dream.
The son of Michael Cooper very much inherited his athleticism because Nils is a skywalker. The 6’6 2023 senior showed off his elite finishing skills with jams and drives to the rim. He had a drive where he jumped and double pumped before throwing one down on the opposing defense. Right now much of his game is based off of his leaping and slashing ability. He has a good handle which allows him to get into the lane and get to the rim. He is a two way player as he moves very well on defense and is a menace at reading passes and jumping the lanes. Cooper finished with player of the game honors vs. Washington Prep.
