SubscribeFall is the long transition from summer ball to the high school season. As we start looking at the campaign ahead, now is a good time to consider who might be ready to bust out.
Here are five “breakout candidates” from Kansas City:
Kante is the definition of a breakout candidate. He is entering his junior season and has yet to break in to the varsity for Shawnee Mission East. But he was one of the most impressive players at some Kansas City club events this summer. Will his size and athleticism translate to the high school game this year? He can play with his back to the basket or face the goal and put the ball on the floor. He towers over the paint and gets off the floor in a flash to protect the rim. This might be one of the fastest risers this fall.
The graduation losses at Olathe South are immense. The Falcons have a ton of holes to fill. Maybe the door will open this year for Polynice. Prep Hoops scouts have had this guy on their radar for a couple of years now. He is an impressive ball handler who can create. He’s well-built and can handle contact and play in traffic. He spends a lot of time off the ball on club teams, but he’s a traditional point guard who penetrates and gets the ball to scorers.

Noland (pictured) is in a similar position to Polynice. The losses at Blue Valley Southwest due to graduation leave Noland as one of the team’s top returners. He got great expeirence last year and is ready to be the guy this year. Noland is a long senior who can play on the wing or at the point, and he can do a lot of different things. He rebounds, pushes the ball in the open court, and will shoot the lights out.
Prep Hoops scouts have loved Kilian’s play for his club teams. He is a relentless worker in the paint who is athletic enough to compete with bigger players. He exploits his quickness and lateral movement to make plays in the lane, and he can get shots off. He passes and runs extremely well too.
Webb is coming off an impressive showing at the Kansas Top 250 Expo and has set the stage for a nice senior season. He can hit from deep with a quick release and the ability to find open shots. He also showed nice ability to move without the ball and get shots off in the midrange.
