Point guard play is key to success at the high school level and there are junior lead guards who have the potential to break out. Here are the 2024 breakout point guard prospects to watch.
Josh Moore Josh Moore 5'9" | PG Montgomery | 2024 State NJ , 5’9 Montgomery
Moore will have the ball in his hands more this season with the graduation of Ryan Curry. The 5’9 guard has a good handle, which he uses to get by his defender and finish around the basket. Moore has a nice touch on his floater and can knock down jumpers from behind the basket. He rarely turns the ball over and is a solid defender. Moore will have the keys to Montgomery’s offense this season, which will help his stock in a big way.
Colin Cavanaugh Colin Cavanaugh 5'10" | PG Red Bank Catholic | 2024 State NJ , 5’10 Red Bank Catholic
The Caseys lost their entire starting lineup from last season, and they need Cavanaugh to step up in the backcourt. The 5’10 lefty has a quick release on his jumper and can get hot from distance in a hurry. Cavanaugh moves well without the ball in his hands and can finish around the basket. He has an underrated handle and makes good decisions with the ball in his hands. Cavanaugh is a sharp-shooting guard prospect who will be a key player for Red Bank Catholic.
Ka’Juan Gee Ka’Juan Gee 6'0" | PG Paterson Charter | 2024 State NJ , 6’0 Paterson Charter
Gee joins the reigning Group 1 champions who have to replace six of their top seven scorers from last season. The Manchester Regional transfer has a good handle, which he uses to get by his defender and finish through contact around the basket. Gee is more than just a slasher as he has a nice touch on his jumper and can knock down shots in the mid-range. He is a strong rebounder for a guard and plays with quick hands on the defensive end. Gee is a tough guard prospect who will have to contribute right away for Paterson Charter in 2022-23.
Jahan Owusu Jahan Owusu 6'1" | PG Princeton | 2024 State NJ , 6’1 Princeton
Scott has had a strong summer and fall, which should translate into a solid junior campaign. The 6’1 guard attacks the basket with a purpose as he is a good finisher around the rim and does not mind contact. Scott rises up nicely on his jumper and shoots the ball with confidence. He moves well without the ball in his hands and is a tough defender. Scott is a breakout prospect to watch as he gets more touches and looks on the offensive end.
Frankie Denvir Frankie Denvir 5'10" | PG Delaware Valley | 2024 State NJ , 5’10 Delaware Valley
Denvir made plays all summer long for United NJ and it should carry over into the winter season. The 5’10 guard has a good shooting stroke and only needs a little bit of space to get his jumper off. Denvir is more than just a shooter as he can also get to the rim and finish around the basket. He plays with quick hands on the defensive end and gets his teammates involved in the half court. Denvir is a two-way guard prospect who will make plays all season long for Delaware Valley in 2022-23.
