We’ll take a look at positional rankings, ranking the guards, wings and bigs.
Here’s a look at part three of the guards rankings, ranking the top 5 point and combo guards in the class of 2024.
5) Josiah Rickards Josiah Rickards 6'3" | CG Catholic | 2024 State VA | 6’2” CG | Catholic (#18 Overall)
Rickards has been an impressive player over the past three seasons at Catholic, and really stood out last season leading them to a TCIS Championship and continued to impress this summer in AAU and the high school live period events. He’s a smooth combo guard who can get to wherever he wants on the floor, he can score it from multiple levels and does so effortlessly and he has a great understanding of the game and can make others on his team better as well. He makes the game look very easy and he can score it in bunches and take over the game as a scorer.
4) Damon Thompson Damon Thompson 6'0" | PG John Marshall | 2024 State VA | 6’0” PG | John Marshall (#14 Overall)
Thompson’s a scoring lead guard who has shown time and time again that he can fill it up with the best of them and is already getting recruited at the division one level. He’s smooth off the bounce with a good handle and the ability to stop on a dime and get into his shot, he can create space at multiple levels and make difficult shots and when he gets it going you can only hope he will cool off eventually. He’s an exceptional shot maker off the catch and off the bounce and he can make plays for others as well.
3) Kris Tiller Kris Tiller 6'0" | PG Glen Allen | 2024 State VA | 6’1” PG | Glen Allen (#13 Overall)
Tiller is somewhat of an enigma as he burst onto the scene heading into his sophomore season picking up a handful of division one offers, and he had a big preseason with Benedictine then abruptly transferred to Glen Allen where he helped them have a surprise season but hasn’t been seen this summer. Tiller is very talented as he has the ball on a string and changes speeds and directions well, he is a crafty finisher around the rim and can knock down shots from deep and he is a good playmaker as well. He seems like he’s always under control and in control of the game on both ends of the floor and we’re eager to see more of him.
2) Tavarres Riley Tavarres Riley 6'1" | PG Freedom-Woodbridge | 2024 State VA | 6’1” PG | Freedom-Woodbridge (#10 Overall)
Riley is prime for his recruitment to take off in the next few years and transferred to Freedom from PVI last year where he was part of a very good backcourt and has been impressive with Team Durant this summer as well. He’s a strong guard who uses his speed and strength to get to spots and create space, he’s a good on ball defender who can guard the length of the floor and he can get in the lane at will where he can make plays for himself and others. He’s really polished up his game as a scorer and is set to have a breakout junior year as one of the top guards in the state.
1) Ben Hammond Ben Hammond 5'11" | PG Paul VI | 2024 State #143 Nation VA | 5’8” PG | Paul VI (#6 Overall)
Hammond is the next in line for the talented point guards that come out of PVI, and while he isn’t the biggest guy on the court he makes a huge impact for his team on both ends of the floor. He’s a tenacious and pesky on ball defender who sets the tone with his full court pressure and ability to turn ball handlers over, he has a very quick first step and blazing speed in transition allowing him to get in the lane and make plays for others and he’s excellent in the pick-and-roll as he can turn the corner or drag it out and play off of switches. He has really improved in his ability to make shots off the catch and off the bounce, and as he gets more consistent with that he’ll be very difficult to guard.
