With that always comes storylines that are formed, but what are the storyline heading into one of the busiest months of the basketball calendar? Let’s take a look at some headlines surrounding the MD/DC prospects of the 2023 class.
The race for Hansberry continues
Our No. 1 ranked prospect, Amani Hansberry Amani Hansberry 6'7" | C Mount St. Joseph | 2023 State #52 Nation MD , has recently witnessed his recruitment get very interesting. For much of his journey, Penn State has established themselves as the favorite and while I still put them in that position for the 6-foot-8 forward, Illinois is making a serious push. In a recent official visit, the Illini staff wowed Hansberry with facilities, opportunities and foreshadowing on what a career in Champaign would look like. While others such as Virginia Tech and Ohio State lure in the background, I fully expect this race to come down between Penn State and Illinois. It’ll be interesting how deep the respective coaching staffs are in attendance for Hansberry’s games with Team Durant .
Can Perkins continue his ascent?
Tyler Perkins Tyler Perkins 6'4" | SG Landon | 2023 State #268 Nation MD took the area by storm since the start of June and earned 11 offers in that timeframe. At 6-foot-3 nearing 6-foot-4 and left-handed, Perkins can score it from all three levels at an efficient clip. He has good size, solid athleticism and a motor that usually results in him playing harder than anyone else on the floor. As it stands now, low and mid major programs that have offered are fully entrenched, but it’ll be intriguing to see if any A-10 or the MM+ programs start to take a peek at Perkins’ progressions as he laces up with Team Takeover National.
Mike Williams Mike Williams 6'3" | CG Bishop Walsh | 2023 State #141 Nation MD proving his worth
Throughout DMV Live, Williams showed his absolute intent on showcasing his scoring prowess. Whether it was getting to the rim with reckless abandon, knocking down pull up jumpers on the stop of a dime or knocking down three’s off the catch, the 6-foot-3 guard did so in efficient fashion while also providing good energy on the defensive end. He’s off to a good start as he poured in 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field in a win over Team Rio. Williams’ recruitment has been comprised mostly of mid major programs, but power fives are starting to move in and keep close tabs.
Can Chesley land his first offer?
Chesley was a standout in the second weekend of DMV Live and shows flashes of being a for sure Division I prospect when he’s on. He possesses solid size at 6-foot-4, explosive athleticism and finishing ability around the basket and is becoming more of a threat with his catch-and-shoot opportunities. While Chesley has had a plethora of programs reach out and express interest, there haven’t been any to pull the trigger on an offer. After his productive month of June, his name should be on the radar of those programs and with solid outings playing with DC Premier , we could see an offer or two be thrown his way in the coming weeks.
