The AAU season is really heating up and most of the local teams will be busy this weekend. The rest of the month will be full of AAU hoops. Things will cool off in the month of June and many players will be busy with their high school teams. This is a good time to take a look at players that have had a nice start to the AAU season. These guys are looking good and I am intrigued to see how the rest of the grassroots season goes for them.

Intriguing 16U Players

[player_tooltip player_id="1270654" first="Jessen" last="Wiebenga"] & [player_tooltip player_id="1270653" first="Garrett" last="Wiebenga"] |6’3 SF| Tea Area/Sacred Hoops Willard

The twins from Tea opened up the AAU season last weekend at Battle At The Lakes and they had a very nice showing. Jessen and Garrett shot the ball well and they did good work putting up points. Jessen is considered one of the top up-and-coming shooters in the Tea Titans program and Garrett is a great slasher and athletic finisher. The Titans are lucky to have these brothers.

[player_tooltip player_id="1266275" first="Nic" last="Marshall"] |6’1 G| White River/Sacred Hoops Kahler

He helped his Scared Hoops team go 4-0 last weekend at Battle At The Lakes. Marshall produced all weekend long in the season-opening tourney and he averaged 19 ppg and 5 rpg. Marshall plays with an amazing feel for the game. Last weekend he was getting into the paint on a regular basis. Nic scores in a variety of crafty and athletic ways. He is also good at drawing attention and dishing the rock. Keep your eyes on this baller from White River.

[player_tooltip player_id="1270361" first="Lane" last="Tietz"] |6’0 G| Groton Area/Sacred Hoops Kahler

His team opened up AAU play last weekend and they went 4-0. Tietz was a scoring machine at Battle At The Lakes. Lane averaged 20 ppg and he also dished out 3 apg. He went crazy in one game and splashed a 31 spot. Lane is a very skilled and smooth ballplayer that scores from all over the court. He can really cook from beyond the arc, hit mid-range J’s, and score at the cup. Look out for Tietz!

[player_tooltip player_id="1415229" first="Tage" last="Ortman"] |6’0 G| Canistota/Sacred Hoops Kahler

His squad played for the first time this season at Battle At The Lakes and they went 4-0. Ortman played a huge role in all of that success. Tage averaged 10 ppg and 6 rpg. He is a highly productive rebounder for a 6-foot guard. Ortman is an extra-special athlete that can make game-changing plays. His mid-range game is smooth and he finishes well at the basket. Tage is also a very tough on-ball defender.

[player_tooltip player_id="1176208" first="Eli" last="Buhr"] |6’1 G| Central Cass/ECI Selects Russell

He has been a standout this spring for ECI. We knew that Buhr had potential but he has been going above and beyond. Eli really impressed me this season with his shooting. He has continued to shoot the ball well this spring. Buhr is a nice athlete that knows how to get open and hit big shots. Look for him to keep improving as the AAU season continues.

[player_tooltip player_id="1454708" first="Oliver" last="Jensen"] |6’0 G| Bismarck Century/ECI Selects Russell

He plays very hard and Oliver has the potential to be a serious threat from the outside. Jensen is a tough kid that does the little things to help his team. He has been the leading scorer so far for this ECI squad. Oliver can also get the job done on the defensive side of the ball. If Jensen keeps improving, he could be play quality minutes next season for Century.

[player_tooltip player_id="1164103" first="Tate" last="Parson"] |5’10 G| Grand Forks Red River/ECI Selects Lund

This Roughrider has been playing very hard on both ends of the floor. Parson has proved to be a difference-maker with extra effort and with how aggressive he plays. Tate has been a standout this spring for his ECI squad. Parson has the potential to be a serious scoring threat from deep and he can also score quickly in transition.

[player_tooltip player_id="1217679" first="Race" last="Wilson"] |5’11 G| West Fargo Sheyenne/ECI Selects Lund

This multi-sport athlete has had a great start to the AAU season. Wilson has also been a standout in track and field. On the basketball court, Race has done a great job of getting to the rim for buckets. He has also done an exceptional job of pushing the ball in transition. Race has the potential to be a lead guard for the Mustangs next season. He has certainly looked the part this spring. I recommend you watch this kid play, Wilson is an impressive athlete.

[player_tooltip player_id="1144617" first="Carson" last="Haerer"] |5’11 G| Bottineau/ND Attack Green

His squad is 10-5 on the year and they won the Championship at the Sanford Spring Jam. He is one of the top shooters in the Dakotas for his age group. This comes as no surprise, Haerer is shooting it hot this spring! His on-ball defense has also been impressive. The Bottineau PG is having a standout spring and he will be one of the top guards in ND next season.

[player_tooltip player_id="1167964" first="Carter" last="Henke"] |5’11 G| Bismarck/ND Attack Green

His Attack team is 10-5 so far and they took home the Ship at the Sanford Spring Jam. He has been one of the top players for Attack this spring. Henke has been shooting it at an impressive rate. Henke has shown that he can move well without the ball and get open looks. Carter plays hard and his effort is relentless.

[player_tooltip player_id="1144491" first="Damon" last="Glasser"] |6’3 G| Dickinson/ND Attack Green

He helped lead his team to a Championship at the Sanford Spring Jam and his team is 10-5 on the year. Glasser is a coach’s kid, so he is always around the game. He plays with a high hoops IQ and Damon makes smart basketball plays. The Dickinson kid has been great on the defensive boards and he has been shooting it very well from beyond the arc.

[player_tooltip player_id="1331228" first="Tyson" last="Stevenson"] |6’2 G| Hamlin/Pentagon Schoolers Vincent

He continues to impress me. Tyson is a gifted athlete that moves well and his feel for the game is special. He drives, creates, and dishes. Stevenson is excellent at drawing attention and hitting the open man. I have been impressed with his overall skill and athleticism. He seems to have a natural scoring ability. The Chargers have a good one with Stevenson!

[player_tooltip player_id="1144483" first="Ryan" last="Larson"] |6’3 SG| Jamestown/Pentagon Schoolers Vincent

He has had some bright spots for the Schoolers this spring. Larson is a big-time athlete that can finish above the rim. Ryan is an intriguing prospect that many colleges should have on their list of players to watch. This Blue Jay can slam home splashy dunks and make many other types of eye-opening plays. Larson is a must-see type talent.

[player_tooltip player_id="1266223" first="Alec" last="Squires"] |6’10 C| Sioux Valley/Pentagon Schoolers Vincent

He has been a machine so far this spring. Squires has recently been invited to the MBCA 2022 DI Showcase in Minnesota this June. That shows what kind of prospect Alec is, the best of the best will be at that Showcase in Minnesota. Squires does everything you want out of a BIG. He is a walking double-double that protects the rim. His athleticism is impressive and he has been dunking against tough competition all spring. Squires is looking like a surefire scholarship-type player. His ceiling is so high, he works hard and Alec is always improving.

[player_tooltip player_id="1266269" first="Lane" last="Tvedt"] |6’0 G| Castlewood/Pentagon Schoolers Vincent

In high school hoops, Lane was a big reason for the Warrior’s appearance in the State Tournament. He has been very impressive this spring. Lane did a nice job at SPTS #1 a couple of weekends ago. Lane can really shoot it down from deep. Tvedt is a deadeye from downtown. Lane can also score around the rim and he has the potential to be a top-notch defender.

[player_tooltip player_id="1270366" first="Jaxson" last="Wingert"] |6’6 PF| Dakota Valley/Pentagon Schoolers Vincent

He is no stranger to winning. Wingert was a key part of the undefeated Panther team this year. Jaxson helped Dakota Valley win 26 games. Wingert has been tough this spring for the Schoolers. The DV big is an accomplished scorer on the block with a nice variety of moves. I love how hard this Panther runs the floor. Wingert is turning into a post player that nobody wants to mess with.
