Despite many players committing to a program at the next level, there’s still plenty of talent available in the 2022 class that can help college programs next season. We already broke down the top point guards which can be checked out by clicking here.
Roderick Coffee Roderick Coffee 6'4" | SG Spire | 2022 State OH , 6’4 SG Spire 2022: Coffee is a prospect who had a lot of steam as a Sophomore, gaining five Division I offers by July 2020. Coffee hasn’t seen his recruitment spike after moving to Spire, but I thought he was impressive for the Wildcats Select 17U last July at the live period. Coffee is a bigger combo guard who is better off the ball but could run the offense in spurts. Coffee makes shots from the outside and can create for himself. We’ll see if a Division I program once again takes an interest in Coffee, if he slips to Division II he could be an early impact type player and look to transfer up if things break right for him.
Jared Frey Jared Frey 6'5" | SG ISA | 2022 State OH , 6’5 SG ISA 2022: Frey is another prospect who had a lot of Division I interest as a Sophomore but Miami (OH) and Ohio were the only programs to offer him way back in July of 2020 and September 2019 respectively. Frey is an ELITE shooter, who went off at the Top Gun event sponsored by Flyin To The Hoop. I would’ve expected some programs to reach out to Frey after this performance on a bigger stage. Frey is another prospect who maybe before the transfer portal exploded would’ve been a Division I prospect, but he could be the type of player who thrives at a Division II school before making the jump as a Junior or a Senior.
Kollin Tolbert Kollin Tolbert 6'1" | CG Fairfield | 2022 State OH , 6’0 CG Fairfield 2022: Tolbert left the OHSAA his Junior season to play at a prep school in SW Ohio, but returned to the OHSAA to play for Fairfield as a senior. He led Fairfield to a district title and made a big impact on a guard heavy squad. Tolbert averaged 14 PPG on 47% shooting from the floor, 33% from 3-point range and a positive A/TO ratio. Tolbert is great at attacking a mismatch and getting to the paint with his creative handle and burst. I think he’s best off the ball but could certainly be used as a secondary creator who attacks a closeout and brings toughness to your squad. Think Tolbert is a scholarship level prospect whether that’s on the Division II, NAIA or JUCO level.
Jerry Saunders Jerry Saunders 6'0" | SG Pickerington North | 2022 State OH , 6’0 SG Pickerington North 2022: I know it’s tough for guys like Saunders who are 6’0, 6’1 and aren’t exactly point guards, but I love a lot of what he brings to the game. Saunders is a tough defender, always willing to guard the best perimeter option on the opposing team. Saunders also makes shots from the outside, as he’s especially dangerous off the catch. Saunders is a tough slasher to the basket and was a productive varsity player for multiple years for the Panthers. I understand why some programs might pass on Saunders, but I think whatever program that believes in him and gives him the opportunity to succeed will be pleased with what Saunders brings to their program. Division II and NAIA programs should be on Saunders but if he goes Division III, he should make a major impact right away.
Quinn Corna Quinn Corna 6'3" | SG Upper Arlington | 2022 State OH , 6’3 SG Upper Arlington 2022: Corna and Nick Heath Nick Heath 6'4" | SF Upper Arlington | 2022 State OH (Denison commit) led Upper Arlington to a district title and one of the Golden Bears best seasons since the Dane Goodwin era. Corna has solid size from the wing guard position at 6’3 and can score the basketball at a high level. Corna had a lot of big games his senior season including 22 points twice against Hilliard Davidson, 19 on Pickerington Central and Hilliard Bradley and 23 at Dublin Coffman. I’ve always thought Corna is a scholarship level player like his teammate Nick Heath Nick Heath 6'4" | SF Upper Arlington | 2022 State OH . I think Denison got a steal in Heath, could Corna be next for some program?
