Last month we introduced our updated Class of 2023 rankings!! Rankings are subjective and PrepHoops.com ranks purely upon potential and where the player will be at their basketball peak. The following point guards earned their rankings after multiple PrepHoopsTN evaluations.
State Champion. State Tournament was Brady’s breakout moment for PrepHoopsTN, though internally his respect was high all season. Killer instinct. Courtney Smith evaluation: The combo guard was one of the bright spots for the Indians during their TSSAA Division 1 Class 4A State Championship run. Stump debuts at No. 77 in the latest 2023 player rankings. The 5-foot-11 combo guard can make shots from the perimeter and can quickly get into rhythm offensively. In the quarterfinals round of the state tournament, Stump had 27 points on 8 of 10 shooting in a 66-52 win over Coffee County. He went 5 for 7 from 3-point range. Stump made it clear during Dobyns-Bennett’s championship run that can score at an efficient rate when his team needed him to.
Eval by Courtney Smith: MatthewBilbrey, Stone Memorial: Bilbrey jumped 21 spots to No. 93 in the latest rankings. Bilbrey is a consistent scorer each time he steps onto the court. The 5-10 combo guard has a nice shooting touch, sharp ball handles, and knows how to get his shots within an offense. Bilbrey is close to automatic from the free throw line as he shot 90 percent in 2021. He’s one of the best scorers in this class, as Bilbrey finished second on the team in scoring (13.3).
June ’21 Evaluation: Facing Morristown East, Person was just a nuisance. His drives were quick and disruptive. Mo East guards really lacked the footspeed to keep him away from the basket. Person was not exceptional at shooting and did not finish as well as Chatman, but he did provide a solid guard with scoring proclivities. Both Person and Douglass are going to be vital to Haywood’s 2021-2022 season. Chatman needs some scoring help this season and they are two guys capable of providing it in bulk. Draws fouls well. Needs to be more reliable as a free throw shooter.
Heavy senior-laded team. Evans will be more prominent in 2022-2023. Shot selection is still only decent. As a smaller guard he needs to improve his outside shot to increase value. Hard-worker.
