SubscribeThis week, I saw four high-level basketball matchups featuring some of the top talents in the state. On Monday night, I saw New Palestine go on the road and take down a good Guerin Catholic squad, 66-60. Then, on Tuesday, Brownsburg went on the road to Pike and showed why they are a true state championship contender. They would dominate the second half and cruised to a 73-57 victory. Friday night, Bloomington North came back from down 10 to take down Terre Haute North, 59-55, thanks to an 18-3 run in a five-minute stretch in the fourth quarter. Then, on Saturday, New Castle went on the road to Eastern Hancock for the first time ever, and this was the first meeting between these schools since 1980. New Castle’s size would prevail, and they would hold on for a fairly simple 63-50 victory. Now, let’s take a look at the other top shooters and bigs from these four games.
Player Evaluations
Aden Cannon (Guerin Catholic) – 6’6” 2022 PF
Cannon is a big banger inside who also had really good footwork and touch around the rim. He bested his career-high of 12 points with his 16 point performance on Monday night. Cannon showed off a plethora of post moves with a baby hook and a couple of face-up moves. He also finished well through contact. I would have loved to see him be more aggressive on the boards as he only grabbed two rebounds, but a great offensive game for Cannon.
Trey Miller

IN
(New Castle) – 6’1” 2022 SG
Miller is a smaller guard who is a straight-up spot-up shooter on the outside. When he catches the ball in his pocket, you can almost guarantee it is going in. He also moves extremely well without the ball in his hands, and he was able to score two easy buckets in the lane off of back cuts. Miller is going to be a big difference-maker for the Trojans in their run in March.
Landon O’Neal Landon O’Neal 6'1" | SG Eastern Hancock | 2022 State IN (Eastern Hancock) – 6’1” 2022 SG
O’Neal is a very impressive scorer who is always looking for his shot. He was guarded very closely by the Trojans all game, but O’Neal was still able to create a couple of open looks. He attacks the rim well, and despite his shots not falling, he has a good three-point stroke. O’Neal has the potential to play Division three basketball if a coach wants to take a flyer on a scoring guard.
Dawson Scott (New Castle) – 6’4” 2022 PF
Scott is a bigger post player inside, and he uses his size and aggressiveness to dominate the glass. He seemed to go after every single board in the game. He also showed off some impressive passing ability from the post. On the offensive end, he was fairly quiet until the fourth quarter. Scott led the Trojans and iced the game away with 12 points and 5 boards in the final quarter. He added 13 points, 11 boards, and 4 assists in the win, and he is going to be a huge inside presence for the Trojans in March.
Silas Spaulding (Eastern Hancock) – 6’0” 2023 SG
Spaulding is an aggressive younger guard who does the dirty work for his team. He is aggressive on the boards and isn’t afraid to put his body on the line. He also finishes well around the rim. Silas is usually lights out from the outside, but he struggled mightily in this one. Look for him to receive Division 3 attention after a good senior season next year.

State
IN
(Brownsburg) – 6’6” 2022 PF
Tupuola is a huge, strong, and powerful post player inside. He struggles with his touch around the rim at times, but he used his physicality and aggressiveness in the second half to dominate the paint on both ends of the floor. Tupuola had 18 points, 13 boards, and 3 blocks in the win, and he helped propel the Bulldogs to the big second half and easy road victory.
