Not all college prospects come from large schools. In fact, there are three 1A high school players from our state in the NBA: Cory Kispert; Kings HS (Washington Wizards), Daulton Hommes; Lynden Christian HS (New Orleans Pelicans), and Joe Harris; Chelan HS (Brooklyn Nets).
The following five small school players are not necessarily destined for the NBA, but they are having a big impact on their teams and are serious college prospects.
Reed Stamps Reed Stamps 6'6" | PF Chelan | 2022 State WA 6-6 2022 Small Forward Chelan
Stamps is a stretch four- he can help bring the ball up the floor and play the pick and pop. After 10 games he is hitting 41% of his threes (29-70) and scoring 18 points while grabbing 9 rebounds and two steals. He has a tremendous basketball IQ and uses his awareness and court vision to slip screens, complete passes, and anticipate where rebounds will be going. Switching on to college-level guards might be challenging but he knows how to gap quicker players and play angles. His long-range, three-point shooting will draw opposing bigs away from the basket. His maturity and effort have grown tremendously from the summer season and his unselfishness, shot-making and poise have made him a respected team leader. He has maintained a 4.0 GPA while taking college-level classes. He has a high ceiling as the 17-year-old already possesses the most difficult to learn skills. Stamps scored 27 and hit five threes when the Goats handed Okanogan their first loss of the season.
Chase Wilson 6-7 2022 Power Forward Okanogan
Wilson has the #1 ranked 2B Bulldogs at 7-1 with his bruising and physical style of play. He plays with great physicality and is a dominant low post force who relentlessly pursues offensive rebounds. He is unguardable at the high school level without being double-teamed as he is simply too long and strong down low. He easily gets great low post position and uses his wide shoulders to score in a crowd. He has a frame that will easily add more strength and he should develop into the same type of player at the four-year level. He is comfortable shooting from the three-point line and is capable of bringing the ball up the floor. He is scoring 20 points, grabbing 9 rebounds and blocking three shots a game. He is a major reason the Bulldogs are ranked #1 in the state at the 2B level.
Kelson Gebbers Kelson Gebbers 6'6" | SF Brewster | 2023 State WA 6-6 2023 Guard/Small Forward Brewster
Gebbers is certainly not “Under the Radar” as the big and athletic guard has been turning heads since his freshman season. He has a great motor, smooth shooting stroke, and is an explosive athlete. Brewster is another top ten team and are still defending their 2020 State 2B Title earned while Kelson was just a freshman. He is scoring 19 points, grabbing six rebounds and getting two steals and two assists a game. He can score from outside, off the dribble or in the low post. It is his frame and verticality, coupled with his ability to score from all three levels, that has colleges such as Eastern Washington watching him closely.
Luke Navarre Luke Navarre 6'5" | SG Zillah | 2023 State WA 6-4 2023 Small Forward Zillah
Navarre is another high-flying big guard/wing type with a great motor. He plays very aggressively and shows confidence without ever trying to do too much. He understands when to explode to the rim using direct line drives and when to pull up early and find the open teammate. His three point shot goes in often enough for him to be a threat and he continues to get it off more quickly and has expanded his range. At the next level defensively he is likely a wing. He does not yet have enough quickness to apply pressure on college-level guards in the backcourt nor the size to defend college posts on the low block, but he definitely would make them work for everything. He is an energy bringer and on the verge of a breakthrough. His long arms and ability to jump off one or both feet make him an excellent slasher and traffic dunker. Navarre is a big reason Zillah is undefeated and ranked #3 in the state.
Aidan Bews 6-7 2024 Power Forward Quincy
Bews has added weight and strength to his frame. As a freshman last season he showed he belonged on the court and this season he is showing he wants to dominate. He has Quincy undefeated in league play and ranked #8 in the state. He has scored 10 points a game and is showing a willingness to rebound in a crowd, use his long arms to block shots, and throw long outlet passes. He is now more able to keep rebounds above his head without being knocked off balance. With another two years of growth ahead of him, it is possible to see Bews grow into a serious four year college prospect as a true post.
