1st Quarter – Dunkerton got the scoring going with a layup underneath from Kaden Behrens Kaden Behrens 6'1" | PF Dunkerton | 2022 State IA . On the other end, a nice post move from Rogan Gergen got Janesville on the board. For the rest of the quarter, the Raiders pulled out to a six-point lead behind 5 first-quarter points from Casey Gardner Casey Gardner 5'8" | PG Dunkerton | 2023 State IA .
2nd Quarter – Derek Hoodjer got going for the Wildcats in the second quarter. His second three of the night cut the Raider lead to 20-13. After the Hoodjer three, Preston Gillespie Preston Gillespie 6'3" | SF Dunkerton | 2023 State IA got himself on the board, going 2/2 at the line. Hoodjer knocked down another three to make it 25-18. Janesville took a timeout halfway through the second, down 7. Out of the timeout, Hoodjer nailed another three and a layup to make it 25-23. Freshman Dylan Marquart answered with a three to push the lead back to 31-25 at the half.
3rd Quarter – It was a back and forth third quarter in Dunkerton. Gillespie got the second-half scoring going after knocking down his first three of the game. Connor Clubine with a bucket on the other end to get Janesville going. With 5:44 to go in the third, Dunkerton led 37-27. Towards the end of the quarter, Rogan Gergen hit back-to-back threes to get the Wildcats within 6, with under 30 seconds to go. After three quarters, Dunkerton led 46-40.
4th Quarter – The Raiders started to pull away in the fourth after a fast break and-one from Gillespie put them up 52-40 with just over four to go in the ballgame. A nice drive and finish from Gardner pushed the lead up to 56-43. Dunkerton took a timeout with just over two to play, up thirteen. Janesville couldn’t get anything to fall in the fourth, only scoring seven team points. The Raiders ran off the last thirty seconds to take this one 59-47, and clinch their second straight conference championship.

’25 Dylan Marquart 5’11″ G – The freshman guard came out and shot the lights out. Marquart led the Raiders with 15 points on 5/8 shooting from deep. Just a freshman, Marquart is a nice piece off the bench for the Raiders. On the year, he’s averaging 5.3 points a contest. A knockdown shooter, he’ll definitely be a contributor the next three years.
’23 Casey Gardner Casey Gardner 5'8" | PG Dunkerton | 2023 State IA , 5’9″ G – Gardner had a solid night, going for 11 points and 6 rebounds. Gardner is super smooth with the ball and is a good scorer inside and out. Tuesday night, the majority of Garnder’s points came from mid-range. His mid-range game is very solid. Averaging 16.4 points a contest and 9.8 assists per game, Gardner is one of the top guards in the junior class.
’23 Preston Gillespie Preston Gillespie 6'3" | SF Dunkerton | 2023 State IA , 6’3″ G – Gillespie is having a solid junior season, averaging 24.2 points along with 7.1 rebounds a game. Tuesday night, Gillespie got the crowd going with a huge and-one in the fourth quarter. He totaled 9 points on just 3/13 shooting and 6 rebounds. On a rough night shooting, the 6’3″ junior helped the team on the boards and on the defensive end. Overall, Gillespie is a very good scorer, able to get a bucket anywhere.
The Raiders won this 59-47 to take the season sweep over Janesville and clinched the Iowa Star-North conference championship. Dunkerton moved to 16-2 on the season and a perfect 10-0 in the conference. On the season, the Raiders have three starters averaging over ten points. Led by Gillespie (24.2 ppg), and Gardner (16.4 ppg), the Raiders have the ability to score from all over. Add in the 6’5″ forward Kyler Rich, the Raiders will be a tough out in the 1A postseason.

’22 Jared Hoodjer Jared Hoodjer 6'2" | PF Janesville | 2022 State IA , 6’2″ F – Hoodjer led the Wildcats with 17 points on 6/11 shooting, and 4/8 from three. Hoodjer was from three Tuesday night, proving he is a solid shooter. Shooting an even 50.0% from the field on the season, the senior forward scores efficiently.
’22 Leo Dodd Leo Dodd 5'11" | PG Janesville | 2022 State IA , 5’11″ G – After missing the majority of the season, Dodd returned to the lineup Tuesday night. Dodd didn’t do much scoring, just 2 points on the night, but distributed the ball well. He again proved he’s one of the best assisters in the state, racking up 7 assists. Dodd is one of the smoothest guards I’ve seen handle and pass the ball. When he needs to score, he can score both inside and out.
After a hard-fought game, Janesville drops to 13-4 overall, and 7-3 in the conference. The Wildcats played this one without leading scorer Wiley Sherburne Wiley Sherburne 6'4" | PF Janesville | 2022 State IA . With him in the lineup, you have to think this game is a lot closer. Fully healthy, the Wildcats have both shooters and inside scorers. Janesville is definitely a team to watch with the postseason coming up.
