Last night on the campus of Mt. Carmel, the No. 9 Cougars hosted the No. 5 Archbishop Cavaliers for a BCL/MIAA matchup. It was a barn burner between two teams who can score the ball at rapid rates. In the end the Cavaliers found their mark more consistently and marched onto win by a final score of 96-74.

Here are three takeaways from the contest:

[player_tooltip player_id="904646" first="Tyheil" last="Peterson"]’s career night

There’s on fire, and then there’s whatever Ty Peterson was on last night. The 6-foot senior guard put up a ridiculous 47 points in the win. 26 of the 47 came in the first half, 15 of which occurred in the second quarter when Spalding built a lead going into halftime. Peterson connected on eight three’s total and shot the ball with the ultimate efficiency. Mount Carmel dropped back into a zone for the majority of the game and Peterson’s approach was to make quick decisions off the catch while finding the weak spots in the zone to spot up. He sprinted the lanes in transition where his teammates were willing passers that resulted in a few uncontested layups. It was the type of scoring night that Peterson will remember for the rest of his lifetime.

[player_tooltip player_id="1367577" first="Luke" last="Bamgboye"]’s upside is evident

With the release of our updated 2024 player rankings, Bamgboye made his debut at No. 6. Since moving to the US from London in the spring, Bamgboye’s improvements have been evident. What separates him from others at his position is his motor and willingness to sprint the floor on every possession. On multiple occasions Bamgboye was rewarded for his efforts as he was a rim-runner. He caught quick advance or dump-off passes and used his pogo stick jumping ability to finish well above the rim. His presence wasn’t limited to the offensive end, Bamgboye continues to put together a solid argument for BCL Defensive Player of the Year with his shot-blocking prowess. He collected multiple swats around the rim last by Spalding players trying to put him on a poster. As he keeps improving with the speed and physicality of the American game, it’s only a matter of time before mid-to-high major programs begin pulling the trigger.

Spalding finding their groove

With the bulk of conference play taking place now and within the next 3-to-4 weeks, the Cavs are finding themselves at a great time. What makes them so dynamic as a team is the number of players who can put together huge scoring nights. Many of those nights it lands on future Villanova Wildcat [player_tooltip player_id="837927" first="Cameron" last="Whitmore"], but others such as 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="954640" first="Jordan" last="Pennick"], 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="1198795" first="CJ" last="Scott"] and 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="904660" first="Josh" last="Rivers"] are all capable of filling up the column. As we saw last night, Peterson can rattle off for a crooked number at any time as well. Now 14-2 and undefeated in conference play, they’ll face a true test against St. Frances on Friday night to see if they can continue their success.
