The APS Metro Tournament began Tuesday, January 4th, and ran until Saturday, January 8th. The tournament featured 16 local teams seeded 1-16. The games were played at 4 different schools, (Albuquerque high, Atrisco Heritage, Cibola, and Sanida High) with the Semifinals and Championship game held at West Mesa High School. The event featured several players that helped their squad in other ways besides scoring. In this article, we take a look at the top Glue Guys from the event.

[player_tooltip player_id="1225905" first="Marquis" last="Renfro"] 5’10 SG Atrisco Heritage 2024 (#12PHNM 2024) - Renfro provided a little of everything for the runner-ups. He defended rebounded and when called upon, came up with clutch baskets. He was most effective when slashing to the rim, and while he was predominantly a straight-line guy, the sophomore did show a little wiggle to his game.

[player_tooltip player_id="1362490" first="Sean" last="Thompson"] 6’5 PF Eldorado 2022 - Thompson did whatever was asked of him. He banged down low while defending bigs, rebounded in traffic, and scored with his back to the basket. I was impressed with his shooting stroke from both the mid-range as well as the free-throw line.

Eliseo Velazquez 5’8 PG Rio Grande 2025 (featured image) - I fell in love with Velaquez game when I watched him play against Eldorado. Sometimes guys are just players and that’s exactly what he is. The diminutive PG showed a solid handle, some moxie when breaking down defenders, and a unique ability to use his pull-up jumper to score. He led his 16th seeded squad to a victory over Eldorado in the game I saw.

[player_tooltip player_id="1293055" first="Maddox" last="Presser"] 6’6 C Rio Rancho 2023 (#27PHNM) - I really enjoyed Presser’s energy and effort. The big-bodied banger held it down on the interior. He showed the ability to defend opposing post players, and a willingness to mix it up, grabbing tough in traffic boards.

[player_tooltip player_id="1076708" first="Tony" last="Pacheco"] 6’0 CG Atrisco Heritage 2022 - Pacheco is one of the most talented glue guys, I’ve evaluated. The combo was able to impact games with his scoring and playmaking. As a passer, Pacheco was above average with his ability to deliver accurate dimes off the bounce. He makes this list for his toughness. In the semis, Pacheco was hammered numerous times, however, he just kept shaking it off and contributing

Follow

On Twitter

On IG

Like Us On FB
