So which teams and impressed us and what did we learn from the classic? Look no further, as we share our impressions of the Holiday Classic.
New Hanover HS was absolutely dominant and already look like they will be a championship contender! They won every game in the tournament by more than twenty points and were easily the deepest team in the event. With a combination of veteran talent mixed in with some freshman that have a chance to be special, they have all the pieces they need to make a run for a state championship.
The EE Smith Golden Bulls are making impressive progress! After a few up and down seasons, The Golden Bulls look as if they are turning the corner. They compete at a high level on the defensive side of the ball, forcing teams into tough shots and turnovers, on offense they run through their sets and try to get the best shot available. Their championship appearance was a surprise to many but after watching them play, don’t be surprised to see them pull off more upsets this year.
West Carteret continues to Roll On! The came into the classic with a record of 8-2, with their only losses coming to South Central and WCDS. They faced good competition in the semis and championship games but didn’t falter when they game was on the line, which should only help them as they make a playoff run.
Don’t sleep on the Westside! Westover HS made another appearance in the Holiday Classic after winning the championship two years ago. The team got the job done by committee this year, and even with their star player battling an ankle injury, they competed at a high level.
Seventy-First has all the pieces to make a deep playoff run! With a lineup that features multiple players standing over 6’5 and a backcourt of two players that average double figure scoring, The Falcons definitely will be dangerous during state playoffs time. They finished third in their bracket after losing in the semis but don’t be surprised to see them bounce back and playing at high level in January!
