Here’s a look at 7 freshmen I’ve already seen that I’m excited to continue to monitor over the next few years.
Martez Harris | 6’8” PF | Cape Henry
Harris was on the state championship team last year for Cape Henry before reclassifying to the 2025 class, and he also grew about 4 inches and that makes him one of the most intriguing young prospects in the state. He’s a skilled big man who can play inside-out, has good touch both in the paint and out to the three-point line and as he continues to grow into his body he’ll see himself become more athletic and mobile as well.
Jaquan Womack | 6’6” PF | Paul VI
Womack is part of a very talented and young PVI core that has a chance to be very special with his blend of size and unique and versatile skill set. He’s a strong forward who can bang in the paint and is a good athlete that can rebound, he can step out and has good ball skills as he can put it on the deck and make shots from deep and his skill set at his size is far superior to most players his age.
Christian Gurdack | 6’9” C | Paul VI
Nicknamed “Big Country” by myself, Gurdack is a massive and young big man who has made a big impact for PVI already this season as he plays his role and benefits from one of the best backcourts in the country getting him the ball in places he can be successful. While he isn’t the most mobile guy he plays hard and runs the floor hard, he’s a paint clogger and has good hands and feet in the post and he has excellent touch around the rim to catch and convert and has shown good toughness and the ability to dominate in the paint on both ends of the floor.
Austin Williford Austin Williford 6'4" | CG Saint Anne’s Belfield | 2025 State #137 Nation VA | 6’4” WF | STAB
Williford, whose father is a former UVA standout and the Associate Head Coach for the Hoo’s, has stepped into a starting role for a young STAB team and shown that he’s an excellent two way prospect who still has a lot of room to develop. He’s a long and athletic wing that plays with a good motor on both ends of the floor, he’s able to put it on the deck and get to spots where he can finish in the midrange and at the rim and he has the ability to catch and shoot from deep too.
Gabriel D’alessandro | 6’2” WG | STAB
D’allesando was brought up with basketball in his blood, and the way he plays that makes total sense with his feel and skill set. The 6’2” wing is highly skilled as a knock down shooter from deep, can handle the ball and has good feel as a playmaker and he simply knows how to play the game and is in the right place at the right time a lot.
Kareem Stagg | 6’7” PF | Oscar Smith
Stagg is one of the top freshmen in the 757 area and has already made a big impact for an up and coming Smith team, and if he continues to grow you’re looking at a very talented prospect moving forward. At 6’7” he has a great frame and is very strong for his age, he can play inside-out and has good touch from multiple levels and he is patient in the post and has good moves and counters to finish in the paint.
Dillon Newton Short | 5’10” WG | Matoaca
Short is a talented young prospect logging big minutes for a young Matoaca team, and he’s already showing he has the ability to score the ball at a high rate. The 5’10” two guard moves well off the ball and is able to hit shots from deep off the move, he can put it on the deck and finish in the midrange and he has good confidence in his ability to fill it up.
