WAUKESHA -- Standouts from Wednesday's action at the Waukesha South Summer League...

[player_tooltip player_id="865845" first="Chase" last="Cummings"] - 2022 - PG - East Troy

Cummings was pretty dominant in a win over Heritage Christian. Liked the downhill, get to the rim mentality of the junior guard. Cummings has a nice motor to him, can finish with either hand, and takes contact really well at the rim. Last season, Cummings averaged about 19 points per game for a very strong Trojan squad. Cummings plays with a really good motor from the guard spot. He does a great job of making himself available off the miss and giving his bigs a clear target to jumpstart the break. Cummings just pushed and pushed until the defense stopped him, which they pretty much never did.

Gherzegher went off for 31 points against Arrowhead. The junior guard has one of the best scoring packages in the state. A bouncy guard with length and creativity, Gherzegher was getting just about any shot he wanted on Wednesday. Gherzegher has a high scoring IQ and knows how to set up defenders in order to get to his spots. With his length and quick stroke, defenders just aren’t going to bother a lot of his shots either. Gherzegher is a bucket getter, but he’s also a two-way player. Gherzegher uses his length well on the other end of the floor to disrupt shots and play the passing lanes.

[player_tooltip player_id="1142141" first="Derrick" last="Johnson"] - 2024 - SG - Dominican

A prospect that’s got some good good size/length and shooting ability, Johnson showed some good things on Wednesday. A top 20 prospect right now in Wisconsin, Johnson played varsity for the legendary Jim Gosz last season and averaged around 11 points per game. Johnson is 6-foot-2, but has some added length and looks the part physically. Has good floor spacing ability. Would like to see him use his size a little more and slash to the bucket, rather than roam the perimeter, but he’s certainly a knockdown shooter that hit 56 triples as a freshman.

Kai Rogers - 2025 - F/C - Wauwatosa West

Long way to go for Rogers, but he’ll be one of the top 2025 prospects in his class. Rogers is already a legit 6-foot-10 with a built body. On the block, he’s got some pretty advanced footwork and finishes pretty well despite multiple defenders usually allowed to climb on him. Loved some of the flashes of him sliding across the lane, catching outside the paint, and using a drop-step or spin move to get to the rim and doing all that relatively fluidly. Like most young bigs, needs to learn to keep the ball high and away from swiping defenders. Also with his size, lateral quickness on defense with be a point of emphasis. When Rogers gets pulled away from the perimeter, he can struggle to move his massive frame -- although thought he got better over time against Mukwonago, who often would isolate him at the top of the key and make Rogers play in space.

[player_tooltip player_id="1039325" first="Matthew" last="Schmainda"] - 2023 - G - Brookfield East

Schmainda had 17 points, including 13 in the first half as the Spartans rolled to a very impressive win over Arrowhead. Might be sleeping on this kid a bit in terms of his ranking as he showed me a lot more of his skillset. Schmainda is a 6-foot combo guard-ish prospect. Already he knew he was a deadly outside shooter with a quick release. He’s also a very strong kid that’s going to come up with 50-50 balls -- although they’re more like 80-20 balls with him. Matched up with one of the best wings in the state, Schmainda won that head-to-head battle as well, despite giving up a few inches. On the ball, Schamainda opened eyes with his speed and shot-creating ability. Didn’t see that a ton from his last season, but he’s a kid that can leave defenders in the dust and keep them guessing by scoring from all three levels.

Nollenn Tabaska - 2023 - PF - Brookfield East

Unranked prospect that we’ll be keeping tabs on next season, Tabaska jumped out in Wednesday’s win over Arrowhead. He’s a little undersized as a post prospect, but can do some nice things with his back to the basket. Tabaska showcased some intriguing footwork down on the block and the ability to score fading away from the rim. Tabaska averaged 1.2 ppg in 2020-21, but did play in 20 contests for one of the state’s top teams.

[player_tooltip player_id="1141628" first="Austin" last="Villareal"] - 2023 - G - Arrowhead

Villareal had 10 points in a loss to Brookfield East. Not gonna wow anybody in terms of stature, but the kid can definitely play. The 5-foot-11 guard averaged 3.5 ppg last season, but was often able to score in spurts and give the Warhawks a boost off the bench. A smooth and skilled prospect, Villareal has a knack for creating his shot and scoring with a hand in his face. Was often able to break down his man and get into a high percentage area. Despite his size, Villareal can finish over bigger defenders and has a nice high, off-balance release when he needs it.
