WASHINGTON, DC -- The action is underway at Maret School for DC Live this weekend. Here are several takeaways from a jam-packed slate of basketball.

Webster Impresses for McKinley Tech

2023 guard [player_tooltip player_id="957046" first="Terrell" last="Webster"]’s performance on Saturday afternoon was a memorable one. Alongside his backcourt mate Rashad Perry, Webster applied relentless pressure on the opposing team’s ball-handlers. He recorded 7 steals to go along with multiple deflections as a result of his consistent effort. Webster’s patience on offense was commendable. He was able to manufacture easy looks for his teammates with regularity. But when it was time to get a bucket, Webster was able to deliver the goods. Most importantly, his team won the game.

St. John’s Prevails Despite Cosby’s Hot Shooting

[player_tooltip player_id="904626" first="Shane" last="Lancaster"] was the catalyst during the extra frame of his team’s hard-fought win over John Marshall. He hit a pull-up jumper from the elbow. Then he followed that up with a fast break slam that shifted the momentum in his team’s favor at a critical time. [player_tooltip player_id="904624" first="Christian" last="Watson"]’s defense was solid. He did well to stay strong at the point of attack and take away air space from his opponent. Xavier Head Coach Travis Steele, who is actively recruiting Watson, was in to see him today. 2024 Nate Guerengomba deserves mention for his block at the end of the game to seal the win (among other contributions). 2024 stud [player_tooltip player_id="1127309" first="Donavan" last="Freeman"] had some "wow, who is this kid?" moments while pulling down (9!) boards in 14 minutes. It would be a mistake to ignore 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="962789" first="Davin" last="Cosby jr"], who shot the cover off the ball for John Marshall and will certainly see an uptick in his recruitment because the gym was packed with coaches. 2024 floor general Damon Thompson Jr. and lockdown defender Dominique Bailey also deserve a shout-out. You know Bailey is a nightmare matchup because of the fear he strikes into whoever he is guarding. And Thompson’s floor game is excellent. Those two will win a lot of games these next 3 years.

Archey paces Gwynn Park in win over GDS

[player_tooltip player_id="904662" first="Ryan" last="Archey"] was unstoppable for Gwynn Park on Friday. The 2022 lead guard pumped in 30 efficient points. Archey shot 13 of 20 from the field, including 3 of 5 from three. He gets wherever he wants to off the dribble and is can elevate over the top of defenses. Archey handled a lion’s share of the scoring duties, but 2024 [player_tooltip player_id="1127311" first="Ty" last="Bevins"] should be commended for his all-around contributions. He is probably the youngest player on the floor but acts like a court veteran. Bevins plays hard, leads by example, and always stays positive. It also helps that he’s 6-foot-5, skilled, and unselfish. Bevins has a promising approach to the game and should only improve as he continues growing into his body.

Carroll Cruises Past University in the Nightcap

[player_tooltip player_id="904652" first="Cam’ron" last="Brown"] made sure his team kept control of this game from start to finish. The reliable point guard defended well as per usual. He got open looks for his team and was aggressive in creating for himself when he needed to be. 2024 [player_tooltip player_id="1127316" first="Israel" last="Bosenge"] also had some nice moments for the Lions. He showcased his explosive athleticism on the fast break when he took off from outside the paint during one of his multiple dunks. A couple of interesting sleepers are on the University roster that could turn some heads this weekend. 2022 forward [player_tooltip player_id="977594" first="Blake" last="Barkley"], who scored 18 points and 7 rebounds, is one of them. The other is 2023 Garrison Kisner, who is playing with Team Takeover this summer. Kisner caught an alley-oop on the break which showcased his coordination and vertical leap.
