Nicholas Johnson 5-9 2022 Britton-Deerfield (pictured at top of article) The surprise of the day for me. In warm ups I thought he was in for a long day against a Lake Leelanau St Mary’s team that can really get up and down the court. He controlled the tempo of the game and kept it in the halfcourt. Excellent shooter both beyond the arc and in the mid range. Set up teammates well and showed good leadership. Not surprising that he has a good academic profile and is a member of the MHSAA Student Representative Council. Looking forward to catching more of this point guard throughout the week.
Carson Bourdo 5-11 2022 Traverse City Central The reigning player of the year in the Big North Conference appeared to be very comfortable in his gym and lived up to his billing. If you were watching you wouldn’t need to be told he is also a standout on the gridiron. Played an aggressive and relentless style in back-to-back games and never took his foot off the gas. Playing with what appeared to be a young team as Central was missing some players. Was the consummate floor general and seemed to be patient with players he might not have played with during the year. Highly competitive and was all over the court defensively.
Jaxon Childers Jaxon Childers 6'2" | SG Benzie Central | 2024 State MI 6-2 2024 Benzie Central Based on what I have seen this summer I was not surprised that the Benzie Central team was the most impressive squad of the day. But I have not been able to catch Childers in person with UTS Elite this Spring/Summer. He did not disappoint. Very explosive in transition and already has the ability to play above the rim as a 2024. Has an unorthodox release on his shot. But gets it off quickly and it goes in. While he is playing the wing right now is an excellent ball handler who could slide over to the point if he is done growing. Future is very bright for the Huskie program and particularly this prospect.
Charlie Howell 6-3 2024 Cadillac I was very impressed with this young wing in limited action during a short regular season. I think he is one of the top 2024’s in the region. He did nothing to dissuade me from that Tuesday, Forced his way up to the varsity level on a deep Vikings team with strong play on the JV. On this particular day he was back to playing with a younger squad and continued to standout. Moves very well without the basketball which you don’t often see in a young player. Smooth and efficient release in the mid range. Will need to add some weight to his frame but there is a lot of potential in the next three years.,
Carmelo Lindsey 5-9 2023 Baldwin Easily the fastest point guard or player I saw all day. Got wherever he wanted on the court. Got hot from beyond the arc banking in a couple from deep. Uses a quick and effective step back to get his shot off. Needed as he is not the biggest prospect. Fearless going to the basket and was good at dumping it off once he got there. Has had an excellent start to his career. If he continues on this trajectory could be one of the best guards to come out of this program with a rich basketball history.
