It is now the middle of May and we are halfway through the high school basketball season in Washington. It almost seems unreal that basketball is still being played, but here we are! The atmosphere is definitely different inside the gyms but teams have found way to keep the energy high level without relying on the fans to help. Here are the top scorers in the Seattle area at the halfway mark.
Kobe Beck — Ocasta — 2021
Halfway through his senior season, Beck is scoring 18.7 points per game and adding 9.3 rebounds. He is a player who has a lot of confidence in shooting the ball, and most of his shot attempts are from the three-point line. This season he has had a nice double-double game with 17 points and 14 rebound while only turning the ball over once. He is a guy who likes the jump shot but does not force it. He is smart and will work hard on both ends of the floor. He has also had a game with 5 steals and 2 blocks showing everyone he is not only a shooter but can play solid defense as well.
Max Debiec — O’Dea — 2021
Debiec is a player everyone would want to play with, and at the halfway mark he is scoring 16 points per game. He also has added 8.5 rebounds and 2 steals a game to go along with it. What impressed me the most is that he protects the ball. When you have a ball dominant player, you expect a few turnovers, but you do not get that with him as he at 1 per game. He has a high IQ and works extremely hard on both ends of the court, with solid size at 6’6. With a shortened season, it is clear who has put in work in the offseason and this young man has definitely been working on his game.
Isaiah Vargas — Mountain View — 2023
As a sophomore, Vargas is having a strong first half of the season. He is scoring 12.5 points per game and bringing in 6.5 rebounds. Game after game, he’s making a huge impact on both ends of the floor. He has a mature game and plays a lot older than he is. I actually had to check what grade he was in twice. As his confidence grows and his game develops, he is certainly a young man you will be hearing about. He is strong with the ball around with rim and has a nice jump shot. He also adds a few steals per game, because he is very active defensively.
Beau Buchannan — Willapa Valley — 2021
Buchannan has started the season out strong by not only averaging a double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, but he has a team-high 8 blocks to go along with it. This young man is all over the court. His hustle and high energy is helping his team remain undefeated because he plays the right way. I am excited to see how he finishes the season as he has momentum on his side. He is a well rounded player who leads by example and the success backs it up. Solid start to the year.
