The level of play and quality of games was tremendous, with some high profile names, teams, and performances going down throughout the weekend. Let’s looks at some of the stand out point guard play.
Mozae Downing-Rivers Mozae Downing-Rivers 6'3" | PG Free State | 2022 State KS , 6’4, Run GMC 2022: Downing had a really solid weekend, controlling tempo, bringing toughness in the back court, and high quality point guard play. He showed his ability to handle pressure in the back court against top notch length and defensive guards of the Beal back court, and made some really tough plays in the painted area. He hit a couple of nice pull up jumpers in shots from the perimeter on the weekend and if that continues to grow in consistency he will be really hard to contain. His size and athleticism that he brings to the point guard spot is next level.
Brian Hawthorne Brian Hawthorne 6'2" | PG St. James | 2023 State KS , 6’1, Drive 5 2023: One of the most fun teams to watch on the weekend was the Drive 5 16U team. They played extremely hard, unselfish, and guarded like crazy, and that started in the back court with lead guard Hawthorne setting the pace and standard. He has great vision with the basketball, makes a ton of solid reads, and his unselfishness really rubs off on his teammates. Hawthorne has taken his great HS season and built off it big time in the spring so far.
Trevor Mcbride Trevor Mcbride 6'2" | CG Basehor Linwood | 2022 State KS , 6’2, SSA Elite Black 2022 (Pictured): McBride’s point guard play was on full display this weekend, and his lead guard play was tremendous against top quality competition in Nebraska Supreme, Lincoln Supreme, and Run GMC. The stat stuffing point guard was stat stuffing again, highlighted with a 23 point, 7 assist, 7 rebound game against Powerhouse, and a 21 point, 6 rebound, and 3 assist game against the talented Run GMC back court. He played really well in the high pick and roll, starting to get his change of pace with the ball controlled and really read the floor well.
Brayden Parra, 6’, Drive 5 2023: Can play both the 1 and 2, Parra was another highly competitive and talented guard on the Drive 5 16U group this weekend. He has a nice swagger about his game, wiggle with his handle, and can create separation and attacking closeouts. Parra is a quality shooter as well from the perimeter, and with how their group moved the ball, Parra and his teammates got great in rhythm shots.
