Continue ReadingThe #PHSpringKickoff was loaded with talent, especially at the 17U level. Players stood out all weekend long with huge games, which made it difficult to decide who to name on the All-Tourney team. There were players we are familiar with and names that we did not know heading into the event but got familiar with quickly. Here are the six players that I think stood out the most.
Sam Howery Sam Howery 6'1" | PG St. Mary’s | 2022 State CO – Pluto Prospects
Howery was my first selection on the All-Tourney Team from the PHSpringKickoff. He came in and dominated throughout the entire weekend as he led his Pluto Squad to a 4-0 record, including a win against a group that many believed to be the top team at the event in which he went for 27 points. He was his usual stat-stuffing self that we saw at the 3A level and against the top players in the state, was a head above the rest. Howery gets out and pushes the pace unlike any guard in the state, make or miss, competes at a high level, and steps up in big games. His 3-ball was falling; he finished with either hand at the rim and his ability to free his guys with no-look passes and high IQ decisions as a playmaker standout. It is difficult for Howery to boost his stock anymore, but with the schools in attendance, all of them knew about Howery and even picked up an offer on the spot during the weekend. A huge event for him.
Graedyn Buell – Gtown 2022
Buell seemed to be playing at a different level than the other players in the event. He scores with relative ease at the rim as he is an unstoppable downhill finisher that got to exactly where he wanted. When guards decided to play off of him, he stopped and popped for 3-point pull-ups and stepbacks. Buell has a maturity to his game, and the game seems to slow down for him. He does not shy away from contact and bullies bigger guys at the rim, and when doing a search on him, it appears that he was the MaxPreps Wyoming Football player of the year as a next-level QB. Buell’s football regimen was on display as he dissected defenses and players trying to slow him down and made the right plays when double teams came. Buell averaged over 20 points of the game, had a game-winner and game-winning plays and decisions in another. He was simply, a man amongst boys. Buell led his team to an unblemished 4-0 record despite not having too much size around him and was an easy pick for the All-Tourney team.
Jalen Barbee – Emerald City
Barbee is a player that was on possibly the best team at the event, and while they had multiple players standout that could’ve possibly made the All-Tourney team, he was my pick as the difference-maker in the game. Emerald City appears to go as he allows him, and he is a versatile wing that had the ball in his hands as a facilitator that scored whenever it was that he wanted to. In Emerald City’s only close game on the weekend, which was a 15+ win, Barbee was the catalyst for his group. He attacks the paint, keeps the defense honest with his jump shot, and has the strength to win his individual matchup. He excelled in ISO situations as well as made the right plays in PnR’s. Barbee was dangerous in the open court and demanded the double team on multiple occasions, and I hope to see more of this really balanced player. Not an easy pick for the All-Tourney team, and if his teammate Kam Robinson did not get injured, he would’ve also been on this list.
Hudson Anderson Hudson Anderson 6'7" | SF Colorado Prep | 2021 State CO – RoughRidersGive
Anderson is the player that we went into the tournament not knowing much about but with the way that he took over in games and the versatility at 6’7, walked away thoroughly impressed with. Anderson has a complete game and showcased the ability to do a bit of everything. He was knocking down his 3-point shot, which made him a tough cover for bigger players, moved without the ball, which ended with a few transition flushes, and also goes inside and battles with the big men. Anderson had mini-flurries in games scoring the basketball, and his teammates knew to ride the hot-man. He soars for rebounds, is willing to make the extra pass, and consistently showed up as a standout in each game. When his offense was not going, he remained engaged, made the right play, and kept the RRG group flowing. A big event for the Colorado Prep big man and a player that many continued asking about.
Cameron Lowe Cameron Lowe 6'5" | SF Lewis-Palmer | 2022 State CO – Pluto Prospects
Lowe is a player that we have been high on, but it seems as if injuries have derailed him and limited the type of performances that we are able to see. Now he looks completely healthy and ready to prove that he belongs. Lowe was a big reason that Pluto Prospects went undefeated on the weekend as he made some huge plays with the ball in his hands as a wing that does a bit of everything. Lowe consistently scored the ball, got out in the open court, finished, and shot the ball well. Lowe has a face-up game and size that makes him difficult to contain, and he seems to counter what the defense gives him as we saw multiple two-combo moves and finishes at the rim. He is a big body defender that takes his matchups seriously, rebounds hard, and does all of the small things for Pluto that keep them going. He barely edged out teammate Brady Jones Brady Jones 6'7" | PF Lewis-Palmer | 2022 State CO for the All-Tourney team as he had a great weekend on both ends of the court. Looking forward to seeing more healthy Cam Lowe moments.
Amondo Miller Amondo Miller 6'6" | CG Valor Christian | 2021 State CO – RoughRidersGive
Miller is a true competitor that made highlight play after highlight play all weekend long. He took the roof off of the building on multiple occasions as the 6’5 combo-guard had body-to-body flushes and electric finishes at the basket. Miller scored in bunches and was a nightmare matchup for opposing teams that tried to match the RRG group with size as he blew by defenders for baskets at the rim and found holes in the defense for easy finishes. Miller is a relentless rebounder that kept plays alive, matched the intensity of other players on his team defensively, and did all of the small things as well. Miller boxes out, found the open man battled in each game, and remains one of the best-unsigned seniors remaining in the state. He finishes out the All-Tourney team after a big weekend.
