Thought we would so something a bit different as we look at this Vermillion vs Dakota Valley game from earlier in the week. We will call this a Game Blog and within it we will supply analysis on what we see Basketball in Bullet Points style with player names highlighted.

First Quarter

[player_tooltip player_id="757844" first="Dillon" last="Gestring"] – a 6’4 2021 forward – makes the first shot of the game for Vermillion. When Dillon stretches the defense like that he takes a big away from the paint and so much opens for a player like Dobney.

The first score from [player_tooltip player_id="732179" first="Paul" last="Bruns"] –a 6’4 2021 guard - was a think of beauty between brothers. [player_tooltip player_id="968197" first="Jake" last="Jensen"] of Vermillion is on Paul and has this look of intensity that he is going to stick to Paul like glue. He’s staring at a potential screen, meanwhile, Paul is locking eyes with his brother and Isaac sent a bullet to Paul for the catch and finish at the rim. Jensen was so focused on the screen he forgot to see the ball.

[player_tooltip player_id="975516" first="Jakob" last="Dobney"] – a 6’0 2021 guard - attacked lane and completely pushed off with his off arm and then got his man in the air after he pushed off and the foul was on DV. The DV staff became quickly enraged that they all saw the push off but the refs didn’t. Refs missed one there, Dobney hit both.

[player_tooltip player_id="968197" first="Jake" last="Jensen"]- a 6’2 junior wing - is face guarding [player_tooltip player_id="732179" first="Paul" last="Bruns"] with all the effort he has. It’s worked a bit in the halfcourt but the beauty of Bruns is he can make every d-board his team gets a transition run and because of that it’s truly hard to limit him. Paul with the transition assist to [player_tooltip player_id="975552" first="Alex" last="Zephier"] – a 6’0 senior guard – for his second score. 12-6 DV

We just talked about Paul’s push on d-boards. Because of that you can not take rushed bad shots or you are handing Dakota Valley fast break attempts. Saunders rushed his shot, DV flies the other way. However, [player_tooltip player_id="1130564" first="Noah" last="Gilbertson"], a 6-foot-3 senior forward, does what he loves and that’s taking charges.

Like the idea of Vermillion fronting the post when Paul is inside but for that to work you need backside help that is paying attention. Dobney was late to react in help, Paul catches and scores.

Love the move by [player_tooltip player_id="968197" first="Jake" last="Jensen"] for a score. He pump faked [player_tooltip player_id="732179" first="Paul" last="Bruns"] out of the play and then ever so smoothly attacks with a dribble to the elbow for a pull-up. Beautiful possession by Jensen.

[player_tooltip player_id="963742" first="Isaac" last="Bruns"] with a fantastic ball fake to get around Dobney who barely even moved his feet he was so stunned. Isaac then attacked right and the help couldn’t arrive quick enough so it’s a second make for Isaac. Lots of anxious players on the floor tonight as fakes are completely taking guys out of plays.

DV goes zone and Vermillion handles it perfectly by hitting the big flashing middle who then sends the ball opposite block to Gestring. Unfortunately Dillon missed the deep post shot and [player_tooltip player_id="732179" first="Paul" last="Bruns"] grabbed the d-board. That’s a four point swing because the Vermillion miss became a full court Paul to Isaac pass for a lay-up. They make you pay for your mistakes instantly.

Fakes! [player_tooltip player_id="975516" first="Jakob" last="Dobney"] fakes [player_tooltip player_id="963742" first="Isaac" last="Bruns"] off his feet and steps into him. Great fake by Dobney, Isaac has to sit with two fouls. Isaac stays down, now problem but he left his feet, gave up the points, and has to sit.

These officials are allowing the offense to separate like football players. [player_tooltip player_id="732179" first="Paul" last="Bruns"] just attempted and missed a step-back but before it Paul pushed off with his left hand and Dobney fell back on his heels and just looked at the ref.

Nick Sorenson, a 6-foot-4 junior power forward, gives up his body and takes a charge on the Rosenquist attack. Just like Gilbertson before him, Sorenson stands in and takes a key charge call. Nice defense Sorenson. Moments later Sorenson out-fought his man to chase down a d-board. Great hustle minutes already from Sorenson.

[player_tooltip player_id="968197" first="Jake" last="Jensen"] ends a really nice quarter with a buzzer-beater off the Dobney pass. Two scores from Jensen, three boards, and he’s the guy chasing [player_tooltip player_id="732179" first="Paul" last="Bruns"].

Second Quarter

How about [player_tooltip player_id="968197" first="Jake" last="Jensen"]?!?! Opens the second quarter stepping into what was close to a trail three as he was the last player up the floor and his man wasn’t about to step out to him a step over the arc. Confidence is there and he let it fly for another bucket.

[player_tooltip player_id="757844" first="Dillon" last="Gestring"] just gave the Tanagers a gorgeous spin move into a finish. It was just the spin move on the attack, it was the touch and timing to place that off the window. Impressive, showing his touch in a few different ways so far.

DV just scored off the simplest baseline in-bounds play ever. Bruns and another were on the low block, they both stepped like they were going to cut to the opposite block and Paul just stopped, caught, and shot a wide open lay-up. Jensen completely anticipated a switch. Not sure if that the regular play or DV scouted and noticed what Vermillion was switching on and then threw in the wrinkle.

Zaphier stepped to contest [player_tooltip player_id="975516" first="Jakob" last="Dobney"] but the fear was clear and Dobney knew it. Jakob took one jab step and Zaphier soldout on it so Dobney just lifted in space to swish a three.

The help defense from [player_tooltip player_id="1130564" first="Noah" last="Gilbertson"] has been so, so good in spots. He covers a lot more ground than I expected and gets length on deep attempts. Just blocked an [player_tooltip player_id="963742" first="Isaac" last="Bruns"] shot and then cruised back to a spot to cover ground.

Still so much fear in the body language of the Panther defenders on [player_tooltip player_id="975516" first="Jakob" last="Dobney"] and he seems to sense it. Just exploded by a small guard turning the corner before he even reached the elbow and that forced two help defenders to collapse. Of course Jakob found Gestring for the corner triple. More of that Gestring touch by the way!

The drag step into a step-back from Dobney, the shot didn’t go but another example of how he has these defenders on a strong right now. DV went zone moments ago too.

What a brutal call. Absolutely brutal. [player_tooltip player_id="963742" first="Isaac" last="Bruns"] is about to receive a pass for DV and Cael Mockler steps right into bubble in the backcourt and Bruns runs into him because Mockler looked to draw a call stepping into Isaac’s space where he is about to catch and step. That’s not a travel call on Isaa that’s a player stepping into space and not giving the man a place to land. Terrible whistle and that ref should know better. There were two players all alone right in front of him.

LOL at the lady who screamed at the ref when Dobney leaned hard left to take a charge. Good block call there, hope the lady didn’t hurt her lungs. She screamed like she just found her out full grown pet lion just got loose and was entering the home.

No he didn’t! Yes he did! [player_tooltip player_id="968197" first="Jake" last="Jensen"] cut to the corner and Dobney fed him the corner pass for a three point attempt and before the shot even landed Jensen turned and yelled at the fans behind him! He didn’t even see the half time buzzer beater go in! That was cold. Jensen is a perfect 4 for 4 in this game.

Vermillion up 34-26 and they are doing a nice job on [player_tooltip player_id="732179" first="Paul" last="Bruns"] who has missed 6 of his last 7 shots.

Third Quarter

[player_tooltip player_id="963742" first="Isaac" last="Bruns"] opens quarter three with a shoulders square falling back baseline jumper. The way he stepped against a smaller guard that’s impossible to contest.

[player_tooltip player_id="732179" first="Paul" last="Bruns"] is the Kevin Love of South Dakota when it comes to outlet passing. Incredibly skilled with the quick outlet.

[player_tooltip player_id="975516" first="Jakob" last="Dobney"] says “I don’t want Class A First Team, I want Player of the Year!” Starts half two with a contested three-point make as a DV defender was all over him. Then he scores in transition extending to a very tough angle but still finished the play. Finally, after putting more and more on the board, Dobney has a guy isolated and the DV player took an extra step back out of fear of being attacked so Dobney used the space and drained a third triple. Red hot.

Dobney continues to come at DV in waves. He’s scored twice more at the rim plus his assist numbers are building. Jakob currently has scored or assisted on 69 percent of his team’s points.

I’m here for the Nick Sorenson He was actually shoved out of the way when the shot went up but he circled around and got back into the scrum and saved the ball for another possession. Nick’s effort has been excellent

[player_tooltip player_id="975570" first="Chayce" last="Montagne"] attacking the cup on back to back possessions makes this a ten point game. The speed of the 5-foot-7 guard was too much for the Tanager help to catch up to. And while he was feeling it, Chayce also threw up and knocked down a quick triple in transition.

Fourth Quarter

I got a feeling [player_tooltip player_id="968197" first="Jake" last="Jensen"] is going to take big steps forward as a basketball prospect with every month. This junior has so much confidence and everybody needs shooters. Another nice pass from [player_tooltip player_id="1130564" first="Noah" last="Gilbertson"] and it’s kicked out to Jensen for a triple.

Down 12 and out of a timeout, DV drew up a hell of a play for an easy score. They cleared two from the right side and had [player_tooltip player_id="963742" first="Isaac" last="Bruns"] just to the left of the top of the key. Joey Bryan set the screen for [player_tooltip player_id="732179" first="Paul" last="Bruns"] who stepped to the wing. Of course both Vermillion players feared what Bruns would do so Bryan slipped right to the rim for an easy score. With the help chasing the other Panthers to the other side and two going with Bruns it was an easy score. Nice set.

That portion of the timeout worked. The part that didn’t was the halfcourt zone trap from DV. Dobney calmly handled the high pressure and sent the ball to Saunders who made the perfect crosscourt pass to Gestring. This ended in the Gilbertson score but the plays were made by Dobney and Saunders.

It’s now time to take a moment to recognize the steady, consistent scoring game 6-foot-3 sophomore guard [player_tooltip player_id="963742" first="Isaac" last="Bruns"] has had. His one dribble pull-up into a beautiful lift was sunk perfectly for the fourth time in this game. This was the 7th straight shot that Isaac has made for the Panthers. Efficient may not describe what he’s done so far.

I know you’ve all heard of Big Shot Bob (if you haven’t please look up Robert Horry right now). Well, [player_tooltip player_id="975516" first="Jakob" last="Dobney"] is Big Shot Dob. Dobney seemingly answered everything DV has done with a bucket the other way including a top of the key three paying no attention to the hand in his face.

Big Shot Dob has defenders all over him right now and he’s still made eight of his last nine attempts. This is a truly amazing big game performance.

Even on a rough night [player_tooltip player_id="732179" first="Paul" last="Bruns"] has 11 boards, and counting.

It’s late, game is all but over. DV still trapping some and there is a foul. Montagne has a bit of a push after the whistle to Gilbertson’s back, Gilbertson turns and looks. Montagne knows he’s in the wrong, walks away. Gilbertson sees that, turns and walks away, DV coach gets his guy out. Refs are there, it’s nothing. Kids handled it well after a bit of frustration, coach did the right thing, refs did the right thing. So why is it that just because a fan paid for attendance that they feel they can lose their minds by standing and screaming at these kids? Students, I’m not looking there. I’m looking at the adults, sit down and let it go. If the people on the floor can let it go, you can let it go just as quickly, if not quicker.
